Spedometer Problem ( I think) and searched
#1
Hi Guys...I have 1995 4runner, 3.0 168k miles 2wd(I know, but gas mileage is pretty good). Today out of the blue the speedometer doesnt work. It had the normal make funny sound until warmed up but I just thought it needed lube, today nothing at all. The car seems to shift fine etc.. I searched but couldnt find an answer. What should I check and where might it be located. I teach 5th grade so I like pics. The tach works fine as do all the other guages. Any ideas as well as cost. For you denver folks I just recieved a coupon for 25% off any part as well as 10 % off all parts for trucks with more than 60k miles ( just an fyi)

You probably have to open up your gauge cluster and take a look at the gears inside. someone correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe the speedo is cable driven in these trucks. which means the problem is either in the electrical connection between the dash and the pickup unit. or a broken gear inside the gauge cluster.

so should i replace this cable and how hard is it...also have a pic of the cable. how much are these cables...i have the 25% coupon i was thinking of replacing the o2 sensor maybe not...anyone know a good mechanic in denver metro area....

before you decide whether or not to replace the cable you need to pull that cluster out and make sure it's actually connected. the cable isn't necessarily your problem. though it certainly could be.
pull out your cluster and try and turn the speedo by hand.
that will help you determine if your cables bad or if the problem is inside the cluster.

ok I pulled out the cable i think, big plug behind cluset, it turns has some kind of lubricant or graphite but it turned, so it might be cluster, guess I need to look for pull aparts btw pulling the cluster is a major pain in the but....

in my old 85 4x4 p.u. my speedo did the same thing, and now my 91 is starting to do it too, what my problem was is that the gear connected to the speedo cable inside the cluster develops a crack in it and the cable/gear starts to slip.
