how can i find out what year my engine is? does it matter?

how can i find out what year my engine is? does it matter?

my truck is an 89, but the previous owner put in a replacement 22re and im not sure what year it came from. does it matter?

no its doesn't matter unless it was an efi setup and now it has a carb.

There were changes done to the 22re over the years, but unless you got a 85 ( I think thats the one with the most things different) they are only minor differences.

in 88 i belive it was, they upgraded the efi computer, and they have better diagnostics. but the block is the same from 85 and newer, so it shouldnt really matter what year it came out of.

It may not matter performance wise, but it certainly does, legal wise (Federal).

It's illegal to swap an engine from an older vehicle into a newer one.
Any engine swaps must be from the same year vehicle or from a newer vehicle.

I believe as long as the smog equipment is upto par with the specs of which ever is newer (truck or Engine). So if the truck is an '89 and it has an '85 block, it needs to have all the legal smog stuff for '89. Or if the block is a '91 and the truck is an '89, then the smog equipment has to be upto the level required in '91.
Or atleast that's how I've had it explained to me.

Why do you need to know what year your engine is?
