Technical Question - Noise When Backing Up - Is It Normal?

I've got a stock 2002 4runner (SR5 4 X 4) and have been noticing a noise when I step on the brakes while I'm backing up. This happens just prior to going from reverse to drive. Is this normal? Is there something adjusting that I'm not aware of? Please let me know if anyone else is experiencing this same noise. Thanks!

I notice a metalic clank from the back of my truck when I apply the brakes when backing up. Seems like it just showed up recently, maybe since I just lifted it...dunno.

I looked back there but nothing looks obviously wrong.

It's hard to describe, but it's a clinking noise with a little bit of sliding noise right after, that may be close. And it happens when I first touch the brake pedal going backwards but not if I use the e brake. I at first thought a rear brake shoe noise but that should happen with the e brake too. Maybe the rear adjuster?

I'm going to have someone try to listen with better hearing than mine and see if we can come up with something better. I was thinking maybe slipjoint but that should occur when using the e brake too.

Thanks for the help.

Hey Mick!

Does the noise only happen the one time when backing up, and requires you to drive forward and apply the brake before it will happen backing up again?
(this is a typical concern for other toyota's but I havent seen it on a 4 runner yet.)

Hows the lift? Galen said it was installed.

Right, Jay. It only happens once the first time I push on the brake pedal. One time when I was checking it this morning, it made the noise going forward too after backing up. It's like something loose is dropping against another piece of metal.

The lift is great! Where were you?? lol, we could have made it another community event.

Much thanks to Galen. (He's had a lot of practice.)

Mick, that sure sounds alot like the front brake pad shifting in their holder. When you step on the brake going one direction, the pads shift one way, and stay there. When you go in the opposite direction, and apply the brakes, the pads now shift that way. I just cant recall there being much room for this to occur on the 4 runner. But I thought Id at least mention it. It sure sounds like this is what is happening. But perhaps its not.

Thanks, Jay, I'll check it out. Because of my hearing I can't really tell where it's coming from.
