Mr Priceless' 1986 Pickup Build-Up Thread

Hey everyone, i'm fairly new to this forum, and really appreciate all that contribute their knowledge and opinions to this site.

I bought my 1986 pickup back in october. It's the xtracab version with the 22r, longbed and carb'ed.
I decided to have the carb rebuilt a month after b/c of running rich problems. Long story short, in the course of 6 weeks i received a failed rebuilt carb, purchased and returned 2 remanned ones from O'Reilly's, the first one due to internal vacuum leaks and the other one b/c of malfunctioning choke (it gets cold here). Well, during the exchanging of carbs, the truck develops an antifreeze leak, which from what i can tell seems to be the HG. It was probably started by my stupid butt flooring the truck (with malfunctioning rebuilt carb) 20 miles to fetch my 1st remanned carb. I wasn't paying attention to the temp gauge, but when I got to O'reilly's the gasoline in the carb was bubbling (boiling?)

Besides that, the previous owner installed a cheap HG set off ebay maybe 3000 miles ago, and he was...not experienced. So i'm sure it's the problem. But if i'm gonna tear into this engine to repair a HG and timing....why not do a few other things?

ON TO THE TEARDOWN AND BUILDUP...

My plans for this massive undertaking:

removing head, installing new timing chain, cover (if worn) water pump, etc. for a proper head job.

The more interesting plans i have to do:

carb to EFI conversion from a 93 pu

Porting head and manifolds.

Beefing up cam

Header,

and general performance upgrades to the fuel system in addition to the efi swap.

and Automatic to Manual transmission swap.
this i believe will be the most challenging from what i've read. First off, the tranny i'm looking for specifically is the w58. It has close gear ratios and (more importantly to me) a taller 5th gear than the comparible w55, which is what I don't want. I'm pretty sure i'll be getting one from the early 80's celica, but it's so damn hard trying to distinguish the ones coming from these cars b/c they both weight the same and the outer shells look identical

I've heard that you can count the splines, do the calcutations and come up with the final ratio in 5th, but it requires dismantling which the local salvage yard doesn't permit.

Let me know what you think I would definately like any help you can offer to me on this... I'm 17 and have never really done anything this massive...

I think Massive describes your plan well.....

I think however that converting to EFI and a manual trans, it might be better to start out with something that is already so equipped.

I think everything you want to do can be done, just not sure on the "ease-abilty" of it all. I'd check out Pirate4x4.com's FAQ section as I'm sure everything your wanting to do has been discussed in depth and covered in it.

i have this tendancy to work with what i got....nothing wrong with going on ahead and finding a p/u with said equipped features....except of course for finding it....and then there's the questionability of maintenence, mileage, currently non working components which tie to other potientially malfunctioning components etc. that will eat me and wallet alive. (heh, even though this isn't necessarilly a budget neway) i mean the list goes on. I'll go ahead and polish THIS turd while i'm only set back this far instead of going ahead and buying a different turd for more money and starting back even further behind. And besides, i gotta know the inner workings of efi and trans wiring and the differences between the two systems (in person). When i go through with this project, it would be my honor to encourage and inspire others to mess around in the engine bay, more than before without fear of permenanting damaging anything. Apparently HG's and carb problems will drive me over many cliffs

Just to shed some more light on the situation, i hope to spend a MAX of 3500 on this project total, and i "think" it can be done. I'm developing an ongoing and increasingly expensive list to include all parts that i would like to use.

I am the son of a 30 year experienced mastertech who has owned a few toyotas with the 22r's in his life, and built racing machines since age 14. When i get into a serious rut and confused beyond recognition he will assist.

I also have most of the tools for the wrenching procedures, but no tool for general machining work, which i'm anticipating a lot of on this project (help?)

This will be a verrrry slow build up, as mods will be limited to the time i have to work on them (maybe 6-8 hours TOTAL during a regular work week) and of course per paycheck. I currently have a cushing of about 2 grand that i prefer not to touch, but will if incredible oppportunities arises (which is why i own this darn thing in the first place.) Basically hoping to finish everything by mid June if all goes well. Who knows....

UPDATE with bigger pics in next post

engine removal as of friday:

i did the prep work...ps, ac, alternator, exhaust, and starter removed....

i left the intake on, since some of the bolts requried wrenching the back bolts of the air injectors. 2-3" clearance in the rear of the compartment to get to a few bolts? nty.

on to the yanking...

with a little hand movement, the bellhousing separated from the block with ease. as a side note, the top left BH bolt looking from an anterior view of the vehicle was the biggest PITA to remove. Two swivels and about 24" of extension finally removed the thing.

here it is: \/

Bird's eye view

Andddd it's out

Update

I haven't been able to progress on this since I last posted pics. Long story short, due activities, I was too busy. Now, school's out, no job right now, yards are under control, i'm single (what a feeling to be again), and have a portion saved up that I originally had no particular intentions for.

Plans have changed a bit since I last posted tho. Due to this rather small amount of cash I'm holding, I am no longer going to chase the EFI conversion option right now.

Anyway, I need some help as to what exactly I will be needing to complete the auto-to-5 spd swap.

Here's a mental list as I type. Please add as you see fit (with bb price, if possible) and keep in mind again this is 22r:
w58 tranny ??-$400
w56 bell housing 75
Clutch (which one?)
Flywheel
Shifter
Clutch master + slave resevoir

From what I can tell, (correct me on this) trucks of this year and type with 2wd longbed ext cab didn't have manual options period. I checked the floor under the lining and the fire wall, and nothing suggests premade bolt holes and such for other options

I have limited knowledge on what tools are needed to perform the work involved. Any and all advice is appreciated. As I type this, I'm searching Pirate for answers, but that 300 second rule is &%^# annoying

on the trans swap, would all parts listed be interchangable from say a celica/supra to an already equiped 5 speed w56 truck? I'm mainly refering to the pedal assembly
