Passenger seat won't move forward/backward

86' 4Runner, front passenger seat quit moving forward and backward. The seat still reclines, but I think the cable became disconnected at some point. I used to be able to pull the lever on the side for entering into the back seats, seat came forward, etc. but I've never been able to adjust the legroom. Now it doesn't engage when I pull the lever.

Any thoughts on the problem, or has anyone dealt with this issue before??

I think you need to see if the cable is disconnected. Also check for obstructions like dirt, dust bunnies and petri-fries on the track.
For some reason its a fairly common issue with 1G runners. Its an easy fix. I even "fixed" one with a hunk of coat hanger.

The cable splits into a Y. One part for the back tilt, the other part to unlock the rail slider. There's a little metal ball on the end of each cable, which is held in place by a bent piece of metal.

Happened to mine once too. Undo the 4 bolts holding the seat down and flip it over, as I recall, the problem will become obvious.

If not, just give er a wiggle, and you should be good until you fix it right.

Wiggle don't work. I've tried numerous times to force the seat back, but to no luck. I'll pull the seat and do it right.

i just replaced mine; the cable was broken. i unbolted the seat and flipped it upside down, saw the Y cable, removed and fed in the replacement. i got my replacement on ebay for a good price. as far as i know, there is no lever for sliding back n' forth purposes, only for rear in/out access. easy fix. good luck!

That was eventually my next question; whether or not you could adjust the leg room in the passenger seat. From what I can see, there never was a lever for adjustment, which seems stupid, but then again, it was made in Japan. Not a lot of 6'5" passengers over there I would imagine.

you just have to remember to slide the seatbottom all the way back, before pushing the backrest back into place.

You can bring it forward by lifting the lever halfway up and pulling it forward. This will engage the bottom tracks to move but not the seat back.
