I managed to tear up my passenger side sway bar link bushings on my '92. Aftermarket replacements appear to be hard to find and would rather avoid paying the $200.00 for the dealer part. I am curious about the following: Is there an aftermarket substitution? What other work should I perform while I have this done? What product/company should I look in to? (energy, OME, etc.) Tie rods and ball joints have all been replaced within the last year. The vehicle's rubber, however, is all original, all around.... Please advise. Thanks for the help.

 

Which rubber peice do you need? i bought a sway bar kit (the long bolts and all the rubber pieces) from napa for like 15 bucks i think.

 

Both metal plates, I believe, separated from the bolt. When under pressure, they make a clunking noise and can also be moved up and down along the bolt with your hand when inspecting them.

 

The metal plates (or spacers, if we're talking about the same part) are not fixed to the endlink. If you're able to move the spacers up and down along the endlink, it sounds like your rubber bushings are just missing. Pictures would help, but if this is the case, just buy the 4 bushings from the dealership for $3 each and replace them (assuming you can take the nut off the endlink without breaking the endlink). I appologize if I'm not understanding your question completely. Post up some pics if you can.

 

I got mine off EBay for like 24 bucks, including shipping. The part was fine and the bushings are holding up quite nicely. The stealership wants WAY too much money for them. Ever priced out a Toyota mudflap? That will make you laugh.

I have contemplated getting rid of the truck in place for a newer model, but I can't get this one to fall apart. 245K (w/part time functioning Speedo). I'd like to just keep replacing the small stuff.

 

I had to get mine done to, it was like 20 bucks at autozone

 

Aymilkerson: Was it the entire unit or just the bushings

 

Just the bushings all of them for the sway bar

 

Energy Suspension makes the whole deal (as a kit) for fairly cheap -- bushings, plates, linker arms -- I got a set for about 25 -30 bucks (online). I put in a new sway bar, added these, handles much better on highway (I know, all the true crawlers shuddering in horror!)

Cardenas in Harlingen. Pricey. Service is terrible. I'm ordering the Energy brand bushings.

 

take the sway bar off and throw it away. problem solved. cost zero.

 

x2. I haven't ran a sway bar on my truck in 3 years now.

 

So doing so will only make me dip a little more in the turns, correct?

 

It will allow each front tire to flex independently. Good for off trail. More flex. Bad for street. More body roll and increased rolling/skidding.

 

I took mine off 40,000 mi. ago and have had no problems. It's my daily driver too. It'll give you a little bit better flex off-road, but nothing crazy. The most noticeable thing is slightly more body roll.....no biggie.
