Tire/Gear ???

Alright, well I have a 90' 4Runner 22RE 5speed now to work on

Going to be installing some cruiser coils and bj spacers next week

I want to run 32s instead of cramming 33s under there so I don;t have to deal with rubbing and more mods/lift... anyways I was wondering what gearing I should use (4.10s atm) 4.56 or 4.88 with my engine/tranny setup? Not many 2nd gens on here with the 4 banger, but anyone with help or ideas will be greatly appreciated!

As of right now I don't need to dd it, but it may be that down the road... sorry to be difficult

Go with 4.88 gears. You will rev higher then stock, but you will have more lower end grunt. Great for accelerating or passing.

I'd go with 4.88's too. Plus, should you ever decide on 33's, while it won't accelerate as quickly, you will at least have the option.

good point... will I still be able to drive at hwy speeds (65mph) without reving too high tho? I just know that 4.56 gears from other stock toys are easy to find compared to 4.88. And I don't wanna pay the big bucks to have new ones installed, and I've never done those myself and don't know if I trust myself with something that delicate. Sounds like I should just be patient and get 4.88's then... thanks for the info

Soooo, anyone have any 4.88's?

Or should I still go with the 4.88's and go with the 33x10.5? Or will I really gain much with those over 32x11.5?

sorry one more ? If I go 33x10.5 I will probably go with the rims I have on now, but if I go 32s I was thinking of using some other rims that are 15x8 with 3.5 or 3.75 backspacing, cant remember... any thoughts of rim size for either tire? Well, as far as clearance/rubbing issues?

If you run 4.88 gears you'll be happier with the 33's all around.

AH!! I don't know what to do... I am leaning more towards running 32's, any more thoughts from anyone else before I bite the bullet and just buy these 4.88's from GenXr

Yes, it will be fine.

If you go with a rim with less backspacing then stock (4.75) you might run into rubbing issues depending if you run a wide wheel/rim combo.

If you can, find some factory 4.88 gears from a automatic 4runner or truck (with factory 31" tires) They can be had pretty cheap, and are stronger then any aftermarket R&P you can buy.

go with 4.88's with a 32-33" tire, no matter the width. It will rev a little higher, but thats okay. If you were driving at 80mph all the time then you would want 4.56 gears.

I run 33x10.5 15 on stock rims and no BJ spacers with minimal rubbing on the sway bar. I have 4.56 stock gears, but of course I have the V6 with a tiny bit more power but you have better torque. I like the thinner tire for the eastern mud and such. They do great for the long highway drives as well. The 4.88s will be better with the 4 banger and 33's. More low end torque for off road.

I ran this same setup on my old 94' runner, and it wasn't too bad, but the gas mileage suffered... I would still go with 4.88's, but as far as power it still wokred fine for me

I ran the stock 4.56 gears with the V6 pickup 5 speed and 35" BFG mudders and it ran just fine.
