there's a couple of spots on the frame i can't reach easily because the haggard rusty stock exhaust pipe is in the way. it's real tempting to grab the sawzall and cut it off right at the muffler.

is it bad to have the exhaust dumping out horizontally under the bed? anyone done that and like the way it sounds?

Having your exhaust dump under the bed is not a smart idea. Just another way to cause moisture under the bed/frame so it can rust out faster.

Cut out your exhaust, and get a new tailpipe made.

 

or do what i did...go with exhaust stacks...im going 3.5in stacks behind the cab..2 1/4in tubing from header to stack...going to look GOOD...but im not sure on how it will sound...and it will keep my exhaust out of the water.

 

thats how mine is it dumps out the side kinda right out infront of the rear drivers tyre sound no differnt and i have no cat and a stock muff sounds fine but you do kinda smell it a lil after a wile but you with a pick up should have no problem with it i have a runner

 

My exhaust ends with the cherry bomb. I was putting tailpipes on every 2 yrs cuz they kept rusting off. Because of that and the fact that it sounds WAY better w/o the tailpipe, I just left it off. The next tailpipe that goes on there is gonna be stainless and oversized to fix both problems...prolly why I haven't done it yet...$$$

 

somehow i don't think the steam from the exhaust on a cold day is going to accumulate in there too much.. i'd be more worried about caustic gases, but even that's a stretch.

maybe i'll just cut it off and clamp on a 90 deg bend pointing at the ground or the side or something

 

I cut mine off right behind the rear axle and clamped on a turndown when I put my Marlin Crawler bumper on. I get a little gassed when I'm driving around really slow with the back window open, but that's the only time I notice anything bad. I'm not too sure about the condensation having any effect on the undercarriage. I also like the look of the 'Runner without an exhaust pipe dangling.

 

OR you could dump it right into the fenders or rocker panels.

 

If you feel you have to cut the exhaust off right after the muffler, make sure you route it out from under your rig, unless you want carbon monoxide to get inside the cab, and moisture around your frame. Maybe have it dump out before one of the tires.

 

I would bend it down at a 45* angle, then cut it off level with the bottom of the pipe, so it goes down.

 

no, that wouldn't pass a safety inspection.

 

i'm not worried about exhaust in the cab; i have a pickup, so the only window is pretty far from the exhaust. do you guys really think the small amount of moisture is going to actually collect on the frame and cause any amount of rust? any more than the salt and snow and rain?

 

If you spray some rock gaurd or undersealer, you know the rubber stuff. then you don't have to worry, and here is a pic of it dumping my exhaust right after where the muffler should be:

 

I used to do it all the time but they won't do an E-test unless the pipe comes out from under the vehical. As far as I know it just has to be behind the cab when it comes out.

 

I guess different states have different rules. I asked the emissions guy of my exhaust ending right after the rear axle was a problem and he looked at me like I was crazy. They don't care in NM, they're just interested in what comes out. I do want to get a new system made, but I'll have to wait until I have the money.

 

Thats what I did with my 3.slow and it sounded great, I tried it on my 2.7 and it sounds like crap
