3.4 swap into 1995 4-Runner RWD
Hello,
I'm Scott and am fairly new to the group. I have been reading posts in this forum to get ready for this engine swap about to be performed. I have most of the parts and they are waiting to be installed.
First the lucky vehicle is a 1995 4-Runner 2WD that had a tired 3.0 with 200k miles:

Boxes containing all the dismantled parts:

As you can tell from the previous picture, the 3.0 is out:

The 3.4 engine that I purchased:

I have a couple of questions right off the bat:
Regarding the Transmission:
This is a A340E transmission which should be the same model transmission that is in later (96 and up) RWD trucks, based on my research. My ECU came with the engine purchase (same vehicle) - which was out of a 99 4WD AUTO. My question is basically will the ECU work with my current transmission? Since the 4WD portion in the A340F (Which is basically the A340E with a transfer case, correct?) is manually controlled - I'm hoping that all is well here. I know most of the conversation I have read around here revolves around the 340F versus the 340H in the 4WD world - so I need some help with this determination.
Here is the ECU I have (this picture also has the old one shown)

Regarding the Oil Pan:
Does anyone know specifically why the 3.0 oil pan swap to the 3.4 engine was required? I ask this because every writeup I have read was a 4wd and I am wondering if this is a clearance issue regarding the 4WD front axle,etc.. I have the 3.0 pan, I just didn't want to swap it if it is not needed for a RWD installation (I can do a test fit, just didn't want to have to go to that much trouble if someone knew different).
Thanks and this will serve as my complete build thread as it progresses!

All 2nd gen 4Runners use the same oil pan (both 2wd and 4wd)
On those 4runners, 2wd's were just 4wd delete. Meaning the steering and suspension were the same as the 4wd 4Runners. You have to use a 4wd pan, or you will hit the steering relay rod, aka the drag link.

It came from mstrecycling (Member on this forum: RanchoToyotaTruck). It was a very good deal and I believe the shipping was around $300 from CA to TN. The entire transaction was top notch!

Sorry, my explanation wasn't so clear I see.
You can use the oil pan from any 88-95 4Runner V6, 2wd OR 4wd since they are the exact same pan.
If you get an oil pan from a Truck, it MUST be a 4x4 truck, since the 2wd trucks are not simply 4wd delete, they are a true 2wd setup all their own and thus require a 2wd only pan.
You cannot use the pan from the 99, as it is designed only for Tacomas and 4Runners which have a drivers side diff (instead of the pass side on your 4Runner)
So, to recap: 88-95 4Runner V6 (any) and 88-95 Truck V6 (4x4 only)

btw you can also use an oil pan from a 93-97 T100 4x4 V6, as it uses the same pan as the trucks and 4Runners from 88-95.
Really, the optimum engine to have is a 95-97 T100 V6 (5VZ) since it already has the correct oil dipstick tube and oil pan to fit your 95

Keep in mind the 3.4 trucks (except for maybe the t-100) have rack and pinion steering (no relay rod). So of course your 3.4 oil pan wasn't designed to have clearance for the relay rod.
