Let's talk about 22RE swapping a VAFM from Supra's and Cressida's

Ok I searched and found some info but not the answer for sure. I read that an 82 Supra VAFM is a bolt on for the 22RE. Now the question I want to know is that will the Cressida VAFM work? It is the same engine, 5MGE which is in the 82. Now I recently just got two VAFM's from some Cressida's, one being an 84 the other the 85. Now the 85 is definitely bigger than the 84 but both had the same motor the 5MGE. Now I compared them to the 22RE and they are both are bigger. Now what I want to know is are both of these a plug and play? I have some part numbers:

1984: Toyota# 22250-43140
Nippon-Denso# 197100-2320

1985: Toyota# 22250-43230
Nippon-Denso# 197100-3150

Ok cool. I just remembered my Snap-On Vantage PGM has the wiring read outs on it. I'am going to dig it up and see if it goes down that low of a year for the specs.

What's the benefit to this? The AFM measures the quantity of air entering the engine, how does a Supra AFM do a better job?

Exclamation

Any 79-82 Supra will be plug and play. I found other VAFM's that were plug and play but I do not know the sizes. For example and 83 Camry has the same harness pinouts and so do the Van 3YE's but again I do not know the sizes. Actually others will work but they have a 5v ECM reference not like the 22RE that has an 8v reference. I do not know if the 5 or 8v is coming out of the meter when plugged in or it is going into the meter when plugged in. If it is going into the meter then all you would need is a dropping resistor to get it to work.

The Cressida VAFM's that I have is not a direct plug and play. Here is what I mean. Now this is looking at the BACK of the connector that plugs into the VAFM from left to right: 1-2-3-4-5-6-7

All 83-95 22RE and TURBO, 79-82 SUPRA 5MGE, 81-82 Cressida 5MGE, 84-89 3YE Van, 85-89 4AGE MR2 non S/C, 85-91 4AGE Corolla, 83-86 2SE Camry, 83-84 4KE Starlet

85/86 Cressida, 85 Supra 5MGE, 86-92 7MGE non-turbo Supra, 87-92 Cressida, 88-95 3VZE trucks(T100 as well), 88-92 3FE Land Cruiser, 93-94 1FZ-FE Land Cruiser, 91-95 2TZFE Previa non-S/C, 86-89 3SGE Celica non-turbo & turbo, 88-91 2VZFE Camry, 92-93 3VZFE Camry, 90-91 2VZFE Lexus ES250, 92-93 3VZFE Lexus ES300

I think I got them all. These listed above are for the vane air flow meters (VAFM) only!

I built Supra AFM by using the 22re circuit board and plug-in into 85 supra housing.Look it up on the search:Supra AFM and find my huge write-up :Supra AFM in 22re.Got pictures and my truck runs smoother on the throttle.

Did you read my post? Their is many direct plug in VAFM's but you have to go to the junkyard and measure.

Yeah I read your post. That will work as well. You can do it that way or switch around the wires in the pigtail as well. Also like I stated above if you want to a meter that uses a 5v reference on a 22RE then you need a dropping resistor to go from 8v to 5v.

i just installed mine tonight... i guess it has the intake silencer removed, and it sounds AWESOME! GREAT improvement in performance too... i noticed a BIG difference in climbing hills, i can actually ACCELERATE going UPHILL. still not a V8, but hey, a 22RE CLIMBING a hill at 60-70MPH! i was like, HOLY SHIKES!

See just like what I feel on my Supra AFM's on 22re.It lets you upshift and accelerate without gassing it up especially having bigger heavier tires. Its a great add-on for 22re performance without sacrifying gas mileage.

I purchased a silicone tubing that fits the TB & 3" exhaust pipe connected to a 22re tubing that fits the AFM.The AFM is secured by using two bracket that is bolted down on the fender well.Pretty solid.I dont like the air filter but for now it works well.My other truck has the tubing shortened on the battery side.

so if i get a vafm from 85/86 Cressida, 85 Supra 5MGE, 86-92 7MGE non-turbo Supra it would be a direct bolt on to a 3vze???? and for me to get any performance out of it, it would have to be out of a supra or cressida?????

Read my post. They will swap but I do not know the actual opening sizes between the meters. If someone could post up a 7m VAFM and measure it then on your V6 measure yours and then you could see if it is actually bigger.

Yes the 7mge's VAFM opening is larger by over 25%. I know I have one and yes it will physically plug into the 3vze's harness. Will it work, no.
