Whats needed to swap a 5 speed trans from a 4 speed? other than the trans, driveshaft? same flywheel and mounts?

My truck is a 87 2x4 22r, My clutch will need to be replaced soon, and ive found a few 4x4 5 speeds with a gear transfer case for under 600, I want to make my truck a 4x4 solid axle and this would be my first step, and it would be nice for the freeway even if i dont make it a 4x4

any advise is greatly appreciated

I guess this kind of thing is fun, but don't believe it will offer much performance improvement.

The 4WD clutch is different from the 2WD, if you are headed in that direction. I don't know about the flywheel, but it is probably different too. I'd check the clutch installation. The wire harness interface with the transmission is also different. The speedo will probalby have to be regeared.

Why not just buy a solid axle pre 86 truck?

 

Yeah after thinking about all the crap id have to deal with buying one would be easier.

According the Toyota pickup brochure from 1987, 4 speeds actually get better mileage than 5 speeds. I think it is because the engine is working at a more efficient RPM range at highway speeds with a 4 speed.

The rear end in a 4 speed truck is geared higher than the rear end in a 5 speed truck. I would think that putting a 5 speed transmission in your truck with the 4 speed rear end is probably going to make 5th almost unusable. Putting a 5 speed in your truck along with a different cam that helped low end torque might give you better mileage on the highway. I was actually thinking about trying that with my 4 speed truck.

 

i cant see why it wouldnt work. they all used the W series trannies. 4wd is different parts up front, but for 2wd its most likely a bolt in swap. they were optional for both some years, and i doubt they made everything different. just a few things. hell, do a W58 from a supra. but anyways, the freeway issue depends on the speed you plan to do most your driving. i have a 92 22re W56 5 speed and it doesnt like below 55. bogs the motor too much. but it lovers the 70-85 range. just hums along. i have an sr5 cluster, but the tach doesnt work...so i dont know rpms. research the axle ratio of both and do some math.

 

Sometimes i get carried away with all this, my truck does great at the 70 to 85 range, id say at 2800 to 3700 rpm, no tach, jsut my guess from thte sound of the motor. and thats what id expect it to run from factory. i think its sjut fine the way it is but i like overkill, i dont need to go 100 miles per hour, and i think it would be scary in this truck..


buttt..... leave the 4 speed rear end, do a 5 speed and turbo motor, longer gears less shifting and a scary ride, but thats farrr down the road, just a thought
