Alrighty... Here is my invoice from the ol' mechanic

Air cleaner mod (a hose was rubbing on the radiator fan, they fixed it already)- $23.70

Remove and Replace Reed Valve Assembly- $118.50

Remove and Replace header pipe clamp- $39.50

Remove and Replace Emergency Brake cable from Handle Assembly Back- $102.70

Remove and Replace Rear Brake Drums- $79.00

Remove and Replace all Drive Belts- $102.70 (Alternator, Power Steering, AC)

Sublet Fron rotors to Tire man fo resurfacing- $20

-----------

Not real worried about the brakes... They are to the point where i might as well get them out of the way, but they still got a few thousand left on them.

Parking brake is a no brainer must do... and soon.

What the hell is a reed valve assembly?

I think I can fix the header pipe clamp. I took it off when i was doing my clutch. Don't really remember why i did, or why i didn't put it back. I tried putting it back a few months ago, and the head ripped off the bolt. I need to get some fancy chemicals, free up the bolt, and go buy a new one for 50 cents, so thats $39 i can save.

Anyways.

The rest of this sound fair?

ouch x3.

All I can say is that I got 2 drive belts replaced, both front sway bar links replaced and both rear brake cylinders replaced for $450. That was 3 years ago and was the motivation I needed to turn my own wrenches.

As for the rest of it, as was already mentioned, that's why we work on our oen vehicals. No way in hell I'd pay all of that.

you paid $19 for an air filter? I hope it was a k&n...

The only thing on there thats reasonable is the e-brake cable...and thats assuming that the quote on there included the parts.

If he is talking about the PAIR valve, that could be the reed valve he replaced. Don't know why you would replace that though. It does not effect the running of the engine just emissions to a very small degree.

quad "ouch".

but <500 sounds reasonable, considering you can drop off your truck, go watch a game, and pick it up all warrantied.

i know the brakes are a dilemma if rusted, (i broke a nipple off).

and
if you do it, like the above post says, "pb blaster". yes, its that good.
btw,
after hearing some stories on this b.b., i would also suggest (if you take it somehwere) to video or photograph your truck the day you drop it off.

take pix of everything, from the bumper to bumper. than if anything does go awry, you got proof.

Lots of shops operate on "book" prices.. That's how the mechanic makes money - he gets more work done in less time than he's charging you.

Next time you want the belts replaced for $100, come by my place.

The only thing he has done is the airbox mod to get that hose away from the fan.

I had a look at it myself today...

The belts are fine.... A little worn, but not bad. Maybe replace sometime this spring.

I don't know what the hell a reed valve is, but once i do... I'll have another looksie and see if i can do it myself.

Parking brake... I'll order the part through work and have a friend at midas install it for $30. Probably same with the brakes.

Meh.

the parking brake cable is $65ish from the dealer, and is just a pain in the ass to install. If you want some help with it do a search I put up a bunch of nice pictures, and tips in my thread a couple months back.

If you look at your air intake hose, the thing connected to the little hose thats part of the air intake valve is the reed valve...not sure of much more than that.

Oh, and PB blaster, a ball peen hammer, and a propane torch will pretty much get any rusted bolt loose...except once I had a bolt that had somehow rusted internally, and that baby sheared right off, but the pb still cut through the rust.

You either learn to do it yourself or pay the piper.

K&N is $60 around here.

Walmart, NAPA, Auto Zone and Checkers are all the same price.

Is the prices above include the parts? If so then that is fair prices, if not some are high like the rear brake drums. Where do you live?

Do you have a total for the amount of damage done(to your wallet)?. Sorry, they never taught simple addition in the public schools where I grew up...

Ouch.

I just got a bill with similar kinds of prices.
(well not that similar - but $$ none the less)

In my case I KNEW the mechs, trusted them, and knew the blow by blow as they did the project (gas tank lines etc)
Sure - I paid shop rates by the hour.
I also got work done the way *I* would have done it if I had the time.

I cant afford myself any more.....

---

If I had to guess the reed valve is the air sunction valve thingie under the intake manifld on the 22RE motor. Not sure why its being R&R'd. probably have to take the upper intake manfold off to do it - or have small hands.

There's no racket like replacing accessory belts. $100 for three belts? Probably takes five minutes.
