How do I set advance Timing ?

My 90 4runner 4WD acceleration is slow after the mechnic set back to factory Timing specs. It was 5 degree advanced before he do timing check. How can I set it like before ? I am new to this group, hoping to learn something from your guys on car repair.

the way i had to do it on my mustang was to loosen the nut that held the distributor and turn it either clockwise or counterclockwise to get the timing that i wanted. but i bet the runner is TOTALLY different............

That's how it worked in my 93 Paseo as well. Actually, that's how it is done on every car I've ever worked on. I can't imagine it being different on the Runner.

Well, I'm assuming a traditional distributor. IIRC, my wife's pontiac and my parent's bonnevile (also pontiac) has some other setup (rectangular box that sparkplug wires connect to). It's not a traditional distributor. Sooo, I guess they're not all done the same, but I'd guess most are.

Not so much these days. I used to use it quite a bit, but MS made a lot of improvements in Win2K, and I wanted a windows box for some of the toys I use (3G wireless internet). I just got my grubby paws on a P133 that I may install Linux on for ˟˟˟˟s and giggles.

For the Linux dudes

To bad this pic I have has a white border around it. It would be cool if someone could make it just a cutout without the white surroundings.

Ah i see, I see. I threw it on a little AMD 200mhz box, seemed to preform quit well being a firewall. No hiccups yet

Yeah MS has made a vast improvement over the old NT days. Glad those are over for me!!! Well actually I only have ONE NT box which is for running cisco pix firewall management software, it does "ok"

Thumbs down What was the topic??

On my Honda XR 650 L the spark timing is controlled by a pulse generator that I think is triggered by a magnet in the camshaft so there is no way to advance the timing. On my roomates Cherokee its controlled by a flywheel position sensor and also can't be advanced or retarted (well it IS retarted to start with but in a different way). As far as I can tell the Toyotas have a normal distributer so adjustment is something like the way it is on most other vehicles. Hopefully someone will be able to give a diffinitive answer.

Hopefully he timed it correct. Don't know the specifics of yours, but on my son's 85 you have to put a jumper in to set the base timing. This disables the electronic timing control and allows a true base timing setting. If it is not jumpered, it will show advanced, so retarding from this unjumpered timing will retard the base timeing below specs (= gutless)

Oops, I forgot about the jumper. On my paseo, you shorted two ports in the diag plug with a piece of wire. It's been a few years...

I have the specs here, as well as a shot of the box you need to short to time it:

Mine runs best at stock timing. It was advanced 2 degrees for awhile without me knowing, and it would ping on the freeway under acceleartion, and hills.

Now I get no ping, and the performance seems better at stock timing too.

You will need to jump the terminals TE and E1 at the diagnostic connector, then set base timing, if the TPS is out of adjustment, base timing can not be set properly, when you put in the jump wire, you will want to hear the engien RPM's drop, if it doesnt, TPS need to be set or the throttle blade isbeing held open with suit, clean the throttle body before messing with the TPS.:pat:
