Where and how are you guys mounting your hi-lifts? I'm wanting to put mine on the roof rack and wanted to see how you guys are doing it.

Yeah, every one that I've ever used that people keep on the outside of their truck has needed A LOT of persuasion to work properly.

Every one that has been kept inside the vehicle has worked much smoother.

 

Do you have the factory spare rack? If you do, and don't mind it outside...

...then this works:





Keeps it out of the way and easy to access. I live in AZ so the weather is pretty compassionate towards steel left outside. I do find if I shoot it with some WD-40 which I keep handy it works like a charm.

 

I made a custom rack that holds it on the pass side. The center stud has a hole thru it so I can lock it and leave it.

I like my Loc-Rac, makes it easy to secure and remove it. You just need to find something to bolt it to. Like TC said, inside is better than outside. Mine is over the rear wheel well bolted to a piece of angle iron (from an old bed frame) which is secured at the factory tie down bolt holes.







The thing I hate about putting up on a roof rack is it just makes you that much more top heavy. I'm more worried about a roll-over than most anything else, except maybe fire or theft.

 

I put mine inside. I've also heard they love to rust if you keep the outside, but using a bag to store it in like prior post looks good. Steve at sonoran steel offers a rear cargo area hi lift mount. my 2 cents...

 

I don't think I'd recommend the bag to anyone running one outside. It would keep the dirt off pretty good, but they aren't really that water tight and would end up holding water inside and rusting it faster. If you run one outside I'd say clean and lube it up often, and make sure it still works. Maybe use it to rotate your tires every 3000 miles or something to make sure its working ok.

I give mine a shot of PB Blaster or similar penetrating oil every year or two.

 

Just remember when mounted outside (or anywhere) that like anything, a little maintenance goes a long ways...a shot of wd-40 or something will keep it working when you need it...

 

mt goat- i'm not recommending storing outside, just saying the bag LOOKS GOOD. like i said, i store mine inside.
