My 92 Auto Trans shifter is loose at the base. How do I tighten this? Do I remove all the center console stuff and get to it, or can it even be tightened?

 

The bushings are probably gone.

 

I have fixed two on trucks that had about 250k miles. They are no adjustments or bushings that I found to be replaced. I suggest you get one from a bone yard with as little mileage on it as possible. May also want to check with the dealer to see if they have a repair kit....I never did.

I agree with the worn pivot bushings, they are made of a nylon type material. I do not know if they are an item that can be ordered for replacement. Maybe the junk yard theory for a better unit.

 

you need 2x 90385-11003 from your local toyota dealer... they're dirt cheap.. takes an hour to do

 

so thats really all it takes to get rid of all the slopp?

 

Just did mine about a month ago. Those bushings are at the base of the shifter where it pivots. They get wore out and the handle flops around. Replace those and you will be like new again.

It took me a couple of hours to do on mine.

 

I ordered the bushings and got them installed last night. Took me about an hour and it's just like new. It's the best $4.00 I have spent so far!

Any photos of this work? I have the same thing going on with my 89. I had to replace the bulb that lights the selection PDNR12 and it was tough. The wire that connects the OD on/off was a pain. I could not get OD on/off to work after taking it apart

 

Anyone got a quick write-up how to do this? Mine is really sloppy. Like to get it done soon.

I suppose I could just go in and start taking things apart....lol

off the top of my head... when i did this... uh...

- use a small flat blade screwdriver to pick the collar that holds the shift top button out... it's on the front edge, and has a tiny gap for you to pick it out...
- remove the phillips screws that hold teh transfer case and shifter knobs on... they're at the base of the knob.
- remove the centre console that surrounds the shifter... leave the centre storage console/rear heater box in place... phillips screws
- unscrew the black bezel that says PRND2L... lift it out of the way
- cut the O/D light wires - if you cut 1 wire and then cut the other wire 1" down, and then peel the wires apart, it'll be easier to put back together, and will have less chances of shorting out when you reassemble...
- lift all those parts (knobs, black bezel, sliding covers, etc) out of the way

at this time, it'd be a good idea to replace the shift indicator illumination bulb... 90981-11018 from your local toyota dealer

- unbolt the shifter base... i believe 4 12mm headed bolts hold this in place...
- lift the entire shifter up, and undo the nut that holds the pivot shaft in place...
- slide the pivot shaft out, slide the bushings out, and the new ones in... reinstall the nut
- put all those pieces you just took off (knobs, black bezel, sliding covers, etc), back onto the shifter shaft... feed the knob with the O/D button and wire down the shifter tube. a straightened coat hanger, bamboo skewer or whatever may help...
- once teh wire is fed to the bottom of the shifter shaft, pull it forward, and solder/crimp and insulate the O/D switch wires to repair the connection...
- reinstall bezel and console stuff... make sure your sliding covers are clean and put back properly, otherwise, they bind...

Old tread, but still relevant. Worked on this for an hour last night trying to figure out how to get the O/D switch unplugged - why didn't they do a connector there! Regardless, cutting the wires and putting in new bushings today. Thanks for the write-up.

 

I just went ahead and cut the wires and spliced some male-female connectors and, i don't have the problem anymore.
