If it ain't broke - don't fix it
My 05 Taco has over 40k on it now and I want to tune it up. The only advise I got from my first posting was not to mess with it if I don't need to. So what should be done if it runs fine?
I plan on keeping this truck as long as possible and thought some "preventitive maintenance" might be a good idea. Most of my driving is city/hwy. Any thoughts from you Yoda Techies?

I doubt it has spark plug wires... most likely coil packs. I would change the spark plugs(NGK or denso ONLY), Change the oil (synthetic if you havent already). Change the transmission & transfer case(if 4x4) fluid, change the gear oil in the rear end and front end (if 4x4). Check the timing belt, Replace the air filter of course, and check the coolant( replace is nessicary but toyota coolant usually lasts about as long as timing belts).
The MOST overlooked thing I notice with EVERYONE i know Is they never change there Automatic transmission fluid. Your at about the mileage where everything is thoroughly broken in and settled and its a good time to check everything and change any fluids from when it was brand new. just remember you can never really maintain a car too much. Most people that tell you too never mess with anything on newer cars are the same ones that trade in there vehicles every couple years.

That's more like it - it is a 4X4. Deserttoy84 those are the exact things I wanted to check on. By breaking those factory seals on the gear oil, diffs or trans cases, am I asking for leaks? Not sure if they offer drain plugs.
Should I change plugs and coolant? I thought those were good for 100k! I will check them before replacing.
The truck still runs like a champ. No problems and hoping not to start one.
I appreciate all the input - I don't want to "over maintain". Definitely will go synth from now on.

Toyota always has a drain plug on pretty much everything... especially on the diffs since they're drop out 3rd members. Pulling the axles and dropping the diff just to change the gear oil wouldnt be a smart design. My friends Chevy has that 100k mile synthetic oil in the diffs and guess what... It didnt even last 80k miles, The gear oil was so gross i dont know how it lubricated that long.we also ended up doing axle seals at the same time since the old oil wiped em out. All The stuff i listed is preventive maintenance. If you have to break any seals or are worried about creating leaks just buy the proper OEM gasket or use OEM silicone( toyota uses alot of Form In Place Gaskets) where applicable.Too make sure you dont leak out of any drain plugs just buy new drain plug washers, there super cheap at any toyota dealer. I wouldnt worry too much about plugs or coolant yet. I would def. get the engine oil, gear oil,ATF and Transmission filter changed(if auto). Now that i think about it you should either have the 4.0 v-6 or a 4 banger which both have timing chains so there is no belt to worry about(another good reason to switch to synthetic, the chain will last longer).
