opinions on new gears

i'm running 255/85's, w/ tundra lift and ome's in the rear. i do alot of road tripping and pull my M416 trailer along. auto tranny, 3.4 v6.

i was first thinking of 4.88's but was told that may be a bit much for the highway. so do you think 4.56 would do well w/ the tires and trailer. i'd like to not deal with shifting on every hill i encounter.

thanks,
Jason

I'm not a tire expert so I'm not sure how close your 255's are to my 285/75's. I believe they're within 1/2" diameter or so of each other. I regeared to 4.88 for similar reasons, with pulling a trailer in mind. It is slightly overgeared (higher RPM), but works good for towing, extra weight, and hills/mountains. Not to mention you can crawl a bit slower.

Check this thread that has a lot of comparison gearing/mph/tire info from various members. Specifically see post # 28

My numbers measured by GPS are as follows:

60.0mph @ 2250rpm
70.5mph @ 2600rpm
76.5mph @ 2800rpm

"Drove to Vegas and back over the weekend.
MPG averaged 16.5,
Moving miles per hour average was 68.5 according to GPS."

over gear it, the new tires are wider, heaver, taller then stock. All of these factors come in to play. I would go either 4.88 or 5.29

the new tires are narrower than stock, and only about 4lbs heavier each. i'm def not doing 5.29, it's a DD. i got 22-23 mpg towing out west in places, it would be awesome if i could get 19 towing with these. i'm leaning towards 4.88 b/c i have an auto
