so i just replaced the clutch in my 89 V6 pickup 4x4. i started it up, pushed in the clutch and tried to go into gear and it wont go into gear. tryin to force it into gear just burns the clutch. i used the alignment tool and everything was put in right. any ideas on what the problem is?

 

Clutch disk in backwards? Most have stamped on them "flywheel side" did you see that?

Did fork get knocked off ball stud during transmission installation? Possible release bearing knocked off fork?

Did you open up the hydraulic clutch system? If so, is the air bled out of it and clutch has good resistance?

If the pedal doesn't feel right, pull it back out.

the clutch disk is in the right way. we bled the system. im just hoping theres something i can do without having to drop the tranny again.

 

Adjust your pedal. Might not be engaging the clutch fully/at all, enough to shift anyway.

 

is it engaged? Like when you put it in gear and push the clutch down and try to start it does the truck lunge forward?

 

Can you feel the resistance from the pressure plate springs when you depress the pedal? If so then x2 for the clutch disc in backwards, or maybe something wrong with the pressure plate. If no resistance then has to been air in the system of something with the shift fork.

 

When I did mine, the only gear that worked was 3rd.


I just drove about 20 feet in third gear, and it all started working again.

 

Check the clutch bracket attached to the firewall; push the clutch in while you watch & see if it's cracked & flexing. That's what it sounds like and it NOT uncommon. I hope you didn't unnecessarily replace your clutch when this was the problem.

 

If your pedal bracket is broken, I have a cheap solution to reengineer the bracket to ensure that it never breaks again.

alright so i pushed in the clutch and watched the bracket. it all looked fine to me. i started it up in gear with the clutch in and it did lunge forward a couple inches. it wont go into any of the gears. i tried putting it into reverse and it just grinded. im gonna take it out of the garage tomorrow and try on it more vigorously. any other ideas?

 

you need to bleed the clutch right first off, i bet you did it wrong alot of people have this problem. Not many people are inclined enough to bleed a clutch.

 

my '89 2wd had both the bracket and shifter bushing failed. 162,000 miles.

 

Have someone watch the slave cylinder while you push the clutch pedal (engine off of course) and make sure that the slave is pushing the release fork. It should move about an inch.

we bled the clutch right and the slave cyl does work.

 

alright so if i start it up in gear it will drive. but when i try and shift into another gear it wont shift. ?

 

synchro's? sounds more like in the tranny itself than just the clutch portion.

 

Man oh man does it look like I'm gonna have fun with my clutch. I sure hope I don't run into this problem...
