new truck...

Well new to me that is...Hey everyone newbie here looking for some input. I just bought a 89 2wd p/u with the carb'd 22r. The truck was getting horrible mileage...12-13 on the fwy. After reading some stuff here I narowed it down to a combination of the carb aap valve and a stuck thermostat. After repairing(plugged the vac lines on the aap, replaced thermostat) those items as well as a complete tune up I got 26 all fwy and 20 ALL city. I drive the truck very nicely and save my lead foot for the other truck. My question is, is that about as good as it gets? Ive checked the pcv valve, seems to be functioning properly, im pretty sure the original cat is on there but it passes smog no problem, timing is dead on 0 and 12 (I actually just put another 5* advance into it to see what that does)...ive read up on the egr but havent removed it yet to check it. The truck runs flawlessly even in the idaho winter weather. So anyone got any tips for me, things to check, swap out. I have no problem putting some cash into the truck if it will help out! Thanks in advance for your time and help...you guys have helped me out a ton already! Mike

There's a few, but not many on this forum have much experience with the carbed engines. You may have better luck on one of the older forums like this one for 84-85 trucks. I think the 4x4's went EFI in 86 if I'm not mistaken and that's what most of the people own.

It can't hurt...

It wouldn't hurt to change all of your vacuum lines. Vacuum loss will kill mileage and power fast. Old lines that are dry and brittle will leak alot. Keep going with other tune-up items and I'm sure you'll bump it up there some more. Welcome to YotaTech by the way.

Thanks for the replies! I will check and or replace all the lines. They all look pretty good considering there age but ill try anything. I advanced the timing 5* and ran some top end cleaner through it, im thinking about just replacing the cat, it looks pretty crappy and im pretty sure its the original, I found a receipt from the last owner that showed the muffler was replaced in 96 and they reccomended doing the cat...but to my knowledge its still the original. I will post what happens if anything on the next tank..thanks again
