Water still in exhaust after submersion?

I recently had an accident with a water hole. I think I sucked water through the motor (foaming wet air filter). But my truck was stalled out in the water for about three minutes in which I think water entered the exhaust system (It got into the cab ) I think the water is still in the exhaust pipe. there is a
"low" section in the middle, which also holds the cat.

My main concern is:
1) High amounts of moisture on the ground from exhast when idleing.
2) The smoke after the first warm up. ref. pictures.
3) The general variance in "steam" It'll be there after the initial starting, go away, then come back. Almost like water sloshing around?


The truck was off for about 2 minutes before these pictures were taken. It sure did smell bad.






Now, my only guess is that there is still water in the system, not totally plugging it though. I think the exhaust is passing boer the water. The water got hot, boiled the junk on the walls, then the junk burned.

The truck feels a little sluggish too, as in restricted exhaust...

your lucky you didnt hydro seize your engine.

but to completely dry that out, i would suggest raising the front end as high as you dare, and reving it a bit.

or, maybe a long drive.
i dont think there would be much, as the pipe would be blown free when you drove it home.

i agree with raising the front end. if the truck decides to take a poop on that long drive your sol.

Might want to check your coolant for oil, oil for coolant... or even oil for water. It's possible that you may have done some engine damage. Might want to change out the oil just as a precaution.

How long was it submerged? Do you have diff breather extensions? Might want to check the diffs for water contamination as well.

Seems to me like any water in the exhaust/ cat would burn up pretty quickly and not come back.

+1. It's broke.

Water would dry out in a hurry. How long/far have you driven it since?

Bad smell is NOT a good sign. Plain water steam doesn't usually smell bad.....

Yeah cooling the block of very quickly (sitting in cold water) could be very hard on the head gasket.

And drain your tranny and Tcase as well. I killed my tranny from getting water in it by taking my 82 for a swim. Glad it was a 22R as the intake was on top. I had water up to my distributer. Your headgasket might be done though as coolant does not smell good burnt and it would explain a loss in power and the white smoke in the exhaust.

definitely change ALL your fluids, oil, transmission, transfer case, coolant flush... that is not water steam coming out of your exhaust. hopefully you haven't done much damage, but that is a place to start.

Well I did change the oil, and it was clean. All my coolant was gone when I got it home the first time.

For total miles:
~15 to get it home after stall/re-start
~10 after getting new oil and pressure test


I tried putting my truck in the driveway (sloped like store loading dock) and then a jack under the front end. It didn't do anything.

At this point the truck seems to be fine, minus the extra bit of steam at start up. So, I am just gonna run it gently, try to get a full fluids changed here soon and hope for the best. I assume I need to change the gear oil in both the front and rear, right?

So I am most positive that the HG is blown.

I drove it a good amount over the past two days. 20+ miles.
I went ~10 to my friend's house, and there was just a general rough idle and felt underpowered, but not horribly.
I drove it the next day ~8 miles to In n Out and let it sit for about 25 minutes. After I started it back up, I was blowing steam out of the exhaust like crazy. I et it cool down for about 30 minutes, maybe more, I fell asleep. I fired it up and there was no steam. Felt like it has before.

So from this I think I can determine that the HG is blown, but I can't really prove it yet. Coolant seems to be getting into the exhaust some how, but I've got pressure in all six. I guess the final test is putting a sniffer into the radiator.
