i have a 85 4x4 22r 227,000 blew a hg about a week and a half ago stamed out the tail pipe pretty good all day so i knew what was up. replaced hg waterpump all gaskets timing chain steel guided and new timing cover. truck ran fine with the blown gasket i didnt drive it tho did comp check and shot water out # 1 so prety obvious. replaced all the goodies had the head pressure checked and surfaced came back good. put it all back togeather right no leaks or any of that stuff. It has a crappy exh from P.O. strait pipe from the down pipe no cat to a muff that is old and then to tail pipe (gonna replace that all soon) the pipes are clamped not welded. the dam thing still steams good even at operating temp. runs fine and all but what the heck could it be the crappy muff?? gonna take the cat delete out just run strait to see if it steams out the pipe that would eleminate the muff but what gives.. the hg is less than 3 days old oil and water look good. changed the oil after the thing warmed up the first time after all this and it is good.. .HELP? sorry for the long post

 

PLEASE, PLEASE tell me you changed your engine oil and had everything resurfaced. if so, then thats probably just water in your muffler, i think after a few days it will stop.

 

yea i did i drained the oil took the pan off before we started the project. had the head resurfaced and pressure tested and put it back togeather new oil and coolant, started warmed up to temp drained oil looked good put new oil and still steam??

 

This may sound silly, but if it's cold out, could it be just the normal steam you see right after start up? Are you letting the engine completely warm up (beyond just what the temp gauge says)?

Possible defective HG, perhaps, still letting water by.

Hmmm... Could be just water in the exhaust, like Ozzie said. My 86 steamed for a bit after I replaced the HG, IIRC.

 

yea i live in washington and it is cold here but i did let it run for like 30 min so not too sure i dont want to do the hg again its not loosing coolant so im gonna keep messin with it

yeah, if its cold out. smell the smoke, but dont breathe it. does it smell like coolant? if so then prob a defective HG

 

Na it dosent at alll just looks like condensation but after a HG job it makes me nervous... And it is like the same amount that it had before whith the bad hg when your on the gas it goes away slightly but as soon as i let off it is back Im prety mech inclined and have tripple checked everything im gonna run strait pipe for a min or to loud as hell just to see if it is the muff and the crappy job the PO did on the cat delete and that stuff. thanks for the sugg.and keep em comin

 

my truck did that after i rolled it. even after 3 oil changes and stuff, it still steamed a bit. hell it still does every once in awhile, lately since its been cold. as long as you have good compression and not losing coolant, youre all good

 

I'm actually in the process right now! I'm actually removing the cylinder head tonight (intake and exhaust are off now). My truck was steaming rediculously! I parked it for 3 days and then turned her over. Number 3 was getting coolant and the 22R would only ru on 3 cylinders... so yeah, definetly a new headgasket is nessecary. I just hope mine doesn't freak me out like your's is!

i found a cheap motor to drop in instead of fixin the head
after i swapped the motor in mine still steamed for awhile but eventually quit

No water in the pistons with the plugs out and turning it over .. but is steaming.

the 22r has NO emission. I mean NONE. the PO totally disabled all of it and put a weber carb on. the fuel vapor stuff is just left open.. Im starting to wonder if the gas tank doesnt have water in it? Condensation is 100% here in WA right now.

And all the exhaust leaks and slanted muff dont help.

Im going to run a compression test tomorrow for shts n giggles

The last failed HG replacement I did took 30 miles of freeway driving to cook all the coolant out of the Catalytic converter. I assure you I was worried as well and scratching my head trying to figure out what went wrong. When my friend (owner) came back the steam was gone and has never returned.

 

i just replaced my h/g too, and i have steam comming out. i think its just all the junk that was left in the pipes from the first blown h/g. Also a guy from my local machine shop said his seen a lot of people replace them, and not the catalytic converter, the get pluged up with all that junk and dose no good in the long run for the new h/g. he says you can take a cement "masonary" drill bit, and drill straight through the honey-combs and out the outher side. not to big, 2-1/4" holes should be fine and dose not mess up the smog. im going to do it to day.

 

Cold NW + previous head gasket problem indicates your CAT is full of water. Will take quite a while to cook off....and the warm moist air cooking off will steam big time when its cold outside. I'd say drive it so long as the oil is clear and its not overheating. Is the underside of your oil filler cap dry? Often head problems will leave water on the inside of the cap.

 

Check your plugs and compression. This will tell you if you still have a HG problem.

 

Yes. Just drive the thing and boil off all the moisture in the exhaust.

First time we did a head gasket it threw me for a loop too. On any vehicle that's driven around for a while with a bad HG this can and will happen.
