How do you remove the "TOYOTA" from the tailgate of pickup? My buddy has a silver pickup, I think it's a '91. But he asked me how he could remove the "TOYOTA" decal logo from the tailgate, so I thought I'd consult the fountain of Yota knowledge here.

 

fishing line and use googone on the residue...that's what i did...anyone else have suggestions?

 

Is it decal or an actual emblem?

 

By the way a 91 is a 3rd gen pickup:

4x4 Pickup Generations
GEN 1: 79-83
GEN 2: 84-88
GEN 3: 89-95.5
GEN 4: 95.5+

And I believe that it is a decal. That is what I have on mine. A large TOYOTA if it is a DX, and a small TOYOTA and stripes if it is an SR5. I also have a small V6 decal on the lower left of the tailgate.

 

If it is an emblem you're dealing with; you must be very careful so as to not damage the paint. As was mentioned earlier, I've never used the fishing line technique, but I do like the sounds of it. When I took mine off I slowly peeled around the outer edge of the emblem with the tip of a knife or scraper; when you have enough of it up, hopefully you can start to peel it back from one side.

If it is a decal, the easiest way I've found when I was removing the vinyl decals I had on my Runner was to take a heat gun to it. Slowly heat one edge and then begin to peel it back as it heats up; do this the entire length of the decal. A couple cautions - if it is the tailgate you should be fine doing this as long as there is no plastic pieces near the decal, and second sometimes this method (I've heard) can make it more difficult because the decal will stick worse. Personally, I've never had that problem.

When done, take a cleaner of some sort that will remove the residue left behind (in both cases - the emblem will have a substance much like double sided tape, the decal will simply have glue). Make sure to find a cleaner that won't damage the paint or the clear coat (on that particular year of truck I don't know if it would be clear coated).

I used a heat gun on my decals and plastic emblems. Decals just heat up for a few seconds and start to peel - usually come off in lots of bits and takes a bit of time. The plastic embelems I just heated up for a bit until the glue started to melt then peeled off.

Then you just need to get rid on the residue with a suitable cleaner (I used a tar remover).

eraser wheel is how you remove decals properly and efficently. You can this at auto body/paint supply store..cost about $10 max for the wheel. Put it on a die grinder on a drill and it will remove the decal with out damaging the paint. Thats the method I use at work

 

x2 on the heat gun.......available at any hobby shop and cheap

 

If a decal use a female fingernail.
If a badge use dental floss

 

any automotive paint store also sells a product that is specifically for removing the glue from vinyl letters. i have used before and it worked well. i belive i pulled what i could off with fingers and rubbed this solution on the glue and it brought it all off

 

3M adhesive remover did the job after my buddies high pressure washer stripped the decals from his truck. This is what was recommended in the 3rd gen trucks forum.

 

gf's hair dryer and a plastic gift card for removing lettering, rubbing alcohol/goof off/etc for adhesive.
