Wish I could tell ya. Never drove the truck before I rebuit it. Dead when I got it. I,m running the same cam with thorly headers at 30 over as soon as it,s good and broken in I'll check the mileage. Getting around 17 or so now with 31's, auto, and stock gears on the highway @ 60 -75 mph. Plus it's running rich. can't figure out why yet. Subscibing I,m interested too.

Joseph,

I'm running a 268 and am getting 20-21mpg, 22re 5-speed. I don't think it should changed your fuel economy much at all.

I'm getting about the same, 18-19 MPG with stock gearing and 33's. But I did notice more pull from about 1800-3500 RPMs.

I have heard that it isnt that tough, at least on my motor, as long as the rockers are in good shape, you may have to pull your radiator or jack up your engine, tho.

I put in the 261c when the engine and head were rebuilt (stock rebuild) and I have not noticed a difference in mileage. Still getting 20-22mpg on 33's, 4.10 gears with a 5 speed, mostly highway miles.

When I bought the truck with 31X10.50 BFG's it was getting 22mpg when I factored in 10% for the bigger tires. Now I factor in 20% for the 33's and I'm still getting the same, I'm suprised too. I have stock exhaust with a magna flow 2" CAT, K&N drop in filter, and the cam, that's it. Elevation here is 5500 ft.

I am also curious exactly what needs to be done to install the cam? What needs to be removed? Can you merely undo the stock cam, hold the timing chain sprocket in place with a piece of dowel and then slide the new one into place? Do tell.

To remove the cam the headbolts have to be removed. People say they have successfully removed them and changed the cam without head gasket problems...but I wouldn't try it. But yes, cam sprocket comes off with the chain, cam bearing caps off, old cam out, new cam it, bearing caps on, head bolts back on.

less MPG.
Suggest that it's due to the larger tires, more power, and right foot twitch though. From a mechanical standpoint, you should get more MPG

I'll throw in my 2cents as well. My headgasket was very slightly leaking at 175k, so I pulled the head off to re-do it and used the excuse to throw a StreetRV head and 261C cam on there (truck in sig). Factory tires and gearing. I haven't really seen a noticeable difference in mileage. I get anywhere from 22-24 Hwy and 16-19 City/country roads. I've gotten as bad as 12 (1 mile commute in cold) and as good as 27 (all hwy, tailwind). I do have a 2.25 catback, but otherwise nothing majorly different.

i tried it and swapped cams without removing the head. i ended up with a small leak from the head gasket around the timing cover area. the threads on my stock head bolts were nasty and it was difficult to clean the bolt holes in the block with the head still on...couldn't chase them either. but i didnt have any replacement parts and put them back since it was my only way home at the time. i had better luck the second time around with the head off.
