It's one of the transmission cooler fittings that screws into the radiator. I was trying to disconnect the hose during my timing belt change and it literally ripped out of my radiator. I asked Toyota about ordering it and they said it comes with new radiators and that I could not order it separately. WTF. When i asked how much a radiator was he replied with "You don't want to know."

I tried pep boys and had no luck. Next stop will be Olympic, Napa and O'rielly's.

Anyway it was the fitting on the drivers side. What are my options here? Anyone have a lead on how to get this part?

With that little rubber oring it almost looks like it was designed to come apart. I would call a radiator repair shop and see if they can re-attach it. If not I got my rad from NAPA or Lordco(I forget which) and it was under $200. I wouldn't buy it from the dealer.

Yes, it was designed to come apart. There were threads on it...they are just corroded. Thats why the fitting ripped out of the radiator. I'll check with napa on a radiator price and/or fitting.

Anyone else dealt with this before?

 

I personally would just save some hassle and put an external transmission cooler on it, would help your tranny last longer to, can get a good b&m for round 80 bucks round here

 

i second that... there's a thread here about bypassing the stock tranny cooler and using an aftermarket atf cooler..

you're better of that way..

Anyone got a link to this? All of the searches i have done point to using an aftermarket cooler in conjunction WITH your stock cooler.

Will an aftermarket cooler used alone be good enough?

 

Buy an aftermarket cooler, or stuff it back in and find someone who can weld.

 

I bought a hayden unit today that says it's for lots of towing and RV use. This should suffice as a standalone cooler right? What about the holes in the radiator where the stock flow went? I should be able to just leave those open since they won't be used right?

Coolers are usually rated for GVWR, that is the weight of your loaded up rig and anything you tow. As long you are above that, you'll be fine.

Leaving your tranny ports uncorked on the radiator is ok. If the radiator springs a leak into that section, it will leak out but then you can console yourself by thinking that is better than radiator fluid getting mixed with tranny fluid.

 

If I was you I'd at least Try to plug the hole somehow otherwise water and road gunk will find it's way in there and rust it out faster.

well welding to a copper rad sounds like some new form of welding that i am not accustom to. now you could braze the holes shut but if you over hear the radiator, you will cause leaks all over the place.

 

Just an update for the sake of future searches for the term Radiator...I went ahead and got a new radiator. I don't know what the deal is with the trans cooling section but we were filling up the radiator and coolant came out of that hole. So it's impossible to use the radiator without the right fitting in there. Also....Toyota wants $500-$600 for the damn thing. I got one that seems to be just as good if not better from Advance auto parts. The fit and finish is top notch! I was very impressed. It went in without a hitch and its much cheaper. $180 or so after tax.
