Another new noise! When will it ever stop?

As I have freely confessed before I have this disorder or condition, maybe it would be called in these modern times, "older truck noise detection paranoia disorder"? OTNDPD?

Anyway, now when in gear and only with gas pedal depressed at various speeds I hear (and others in the vehicle! not just paranoid me!):

somewhat high pitched vibrational ringing. Like a high note.
Stop pressing the gas and it goes away.

Oh man, what is it?
oil is fine, just changed.
belts seem Ok.
Looked under the hood, nothing seems loose.
I don't know what to check.

Does it do it in all forward gears or only a few (mainly 4th versus any of the others)?

Can you narrow down the location of the noise to a region of the truck?

Maybe it's something to do with your driveshaft. That would be effected by load, when the throttle is on. No throttle, truck coasts and load goes away from driveline.

Could be your diff as well I suppose. Check fluid level and make sure your breather is not clogged.

Just some ideas.

more info....

well, as I sit in the driver seat, the sound seems to eminate from center of front engine compartment and low.

I will check my front differential level.
What is the socket size on those fill and drain holes?
Uh...what is a breather?

More background:
So, in my dream of becoming a better yotatech I bought a greasegun and mobile 1 red grease. I got on my creeper and went under in search of zerks.
My driver side visor has a diagram that shows a lot more zerks than I have been able to find...I guess I have to unbolt a cover? I took on the easy oen at first, the transfer shaft you can rotate by hand. I did I think 2 zerks at the forward end. As I pumped in grease I heard that pop of the old grease.
but I also saw axial movement of that entire shaft. it slightly started telescoping at one point. Uh, is that bad? I've been in 4WD (4H and 4L) since then and all seemed OK.

Oh, that little rubber booted thingy that is on the transmission which I think goes up and is your 4WD selector knob..is that a big ass zerk on there?
That small sub-component is heavily rusted. accordion boot seems ok. The othe boot always has a small drop of black fluid at the bottom but no puddles or drop marks under car ever...

thanks fellas

Have you checked out the water pump? Could be going out. What about the idler pulley? that coule be making that high pitched noise. I would be leaning more toward the idler pulley/tensioner.

i dunno.
They just changed the water pump last month.
Nice and new and shiny.
Showed me the old one in the dumpster.
Coolant temps fine.

So, under a load the idler/tensioner might start a squel?
How do I check it?

What is a breather? Still dunno.

A breather is to let presure out of the diff and other components that have breathers. its a little nipple with a cap on it on the top of both diff housings. if the breather is cloged the presure wont be able to escape the diff and find the weakest seal on the diff and leak. to prevent this from hapening you can do the diff breather mod witch rases the breather with some fule line so it cant get dirty or suck water into your axles.

It's amazing how well vehicles run when the radio is on. It's also amazing how impending the doom is in silence. We have a van that if the radio is off, you would think "it's gonna blow!" For over 100 thousand miles, the radio has fixed this "problem"

Yes, I would love a new CD player and massive speakers...

Well, I rolled under the ol' girl on my autozone creeper.
Eye-balled the idler on the entire fan belt dealy.
Shot some WD40 in there with the red straw applicator.
hopeful as I was, she still made the noise.

But man if my front differential doesn't look rustier lately...
OK, that is my next step, replace the front differential fluid.
Obvioulsy I was lied to at my last repair facility.
drain and fill bolt plugs looked very "untouched since who knows when..."
EFFERS!!!

The whistling high pitch squely whiney noise comes and goes. So it cannot yet indicate immediate impending doom or a catastrophic roll-over firery crash, at least I'm hoping....

I havvvvve popped her into 4H/4L more time sover the last few weeks than in the previous 17 years so maybe I effed up soemthing in there?
Funny thing it seemed to go away when I was on the road cruising along 4H.

OHHHH, so I was under there and grabbed them CV joints and moved them laterally and they did move back and forth maybe half and inch or so. And the left one that I thi kj makes the opther noise I noticed a few weeks ago, it really made a knock noise as I moved it to the left laterally. Jeez!

No toyota shops around here that I have found yet...

*******
By the way, for whoever cares, today is my last day of military active duty. 21 years 6 months and 9 days. Tomorrow I wake up as an old retired guy.
My wife just handed me a fresh dos equis. YEEE-HAWWW!!!!

i fount your problem.
autozone

as for the grease, zerks are one made in one side, maybe a picture of this big thing you are talking about?

also, the rest of your zerks are probably hidden under dirt.

I have a lincoln power greaser, it runs on batteries like a drill and has a high and low setting. i swear by it, i dont know how i would live with anything else. It might now be nessesary for you, but it is a life saver when keeping our truck fleet going. if you have a little extra money it is well worth it in my eyes

91muddog,
My mistake. I studied the manual and now see it is a bleed valve for the clutch release cylinder....

swaycleveland,

Oh, that remarks was about another little question I had in my second post in this thread. Something I saw when under the truck looking into what might be causing this noise.
I get going too many different directions on this forum.
