Factory rear LSD not working...can be repaired ?

Hello

Today i tried in snow but looks like my rear factory LSD not working (one of the wheels spin, the other not).
So can be done something, or i need to replace ?
If need to be replaced, the Trutetrac LSD is a good choice ?
(i have truetrac LSD in front).

Thanks
Zoli

We didn't get a factory LSD in the rear for American trucks. Is this stock in yours? The only LSD I know the factory made for is the clutchless type used in the Supra. The truetrac is a good unit. I run lockers front and rear but snow isn't really a common surface for me.

You should be able to get new clutchs for the LSD but you may also want to check your rear fluid and add some LSD fluid before you tear into it.

you should be able to replace the clutch packs. thats a dealer item. most factory LSD's require the "friction modifier" liquid to be added to the gear oil, but if it's not working the clutches are probably gone.

jack up the rear end with the truck in neutral, and try spinning one of the rear wheels. after a little turning the other wheel should spin the same direction is the lsd is working correctly.

i'm not sure what exactly is required to rebuild a factory lsd in a toyota as i've never actually seen one.

I'm not familiar with whatever LSD that is. The factory unit from a Supra is similart to the Truetrac - it uses gears instead of clutches.

Yeah, hopefully you've been using a gear oil with an LSD additive?

You are right and wrong.
MkII Supra will fit a 86-95 FRONT diff (or 2wd rear, 7.5")
MKIII Supra is clutch type 8"
MKIV Supra is gear type (like truetrac) 8"

I added LSD gear oil bought from Toyota.
Today i will try to lift the rear, and spin the wheel, to see if working.

If not, i think it is cheaper to buy a Truetrac , becouse i think the parts needed to repair the factory LSD will be expensive.

Thanks

dont just look for them to go the same direction.. that just means you have LSD.. try holding one wheel while spinning the other (if you can spin it then your LSD cltuches are worn out)

On the truetrac, it's a decent diff if you are mostly street driving.

It'll handle a 32" tire
It works decent on pavement where both wheels are loaded
It works decent in snow

It is terrible when you are offroading. Once one wheel leaves the ground the diff does nothing, it's like an open diff then. The bias isn't very high either.

Also, be sure to weld the bolts. These factory tightened bolts have no retainers and can come loose. When they do it'll destroy the entire system.

So, if you are running 32" or smaller tires, if you drive 99% street/snow and secure the diff bolts the truetrac is a nice unit.

If you are a serious offroader get something else.

I choose the Detroit LSD, becouse we have here 6 month of snow (from november till april) , and offroad i see snow also in may
As i read the LSD is great in snow , already mounted a Truetrac LSD in front , now is time to change the factory LSD becouse not working. (i think it is normal after 17 years).
