Sounds like your timing chain has eaten through its guides. Have you pulled your valve cover and taken a look? It's not hard to do; only 4 bolts.

YES the timing chain andf guides probably are not 5,000 miles old and its rattled before and after the timing rebuild...My father seems to think it is a bad head ...It may be but it kinda seems like the mains the way it rattles when the motor has no strain ...It sounds as loud as a rod knocking....This has got me stumped

check your valve cover some have stated in other threads that if it is to tight the rocker arms will tap against it you may also just need a valve adjustment.

did you check your idler pulleys(AC and powersteering)? they have bearings that go bad and rattle, the sound echos thru the brackets on the head and make it sound like the timing chain. You can get a long screw driver or stethescope and listen to the idler to see if it matches the sound or you can remove all the belts but the waterpump/alt belt and see if the sound goes away.

It is also highly probable that it could be a bad fuel pump(22r) or a loose valve rocker.

it will be messy but you mat want to pull the valve cover and start it for a few seconds and see if it is louder but I would first check the pulleys like stated above I have found tubing to work well to listen for noises if you don't want to buy a stethoscope.

my v6 makes a awful clacky noise at cold start up and it is the reed valve at first I thought my valves where making noise after the flip but I used a hose to listen around the motor and it was coming from close to the reed valve I unplugged the vac line to it and the noise went away.

i heard from the dealer (and fellow toy owners) that the valve cover could be too tight.

replace the half moon gasket and top rubber grommets.
also, only tighten till the rubber just gets compressed. (when i bought all my gaskets for my 22r, they told me this tidbit of info).

as, if we overtighten the valve cover, there could be contact from the cam/valves hitting the cover.

hope thats it, b/c its easy.

Sounds like a head gasket leak. You are hearing pinging. You may also have a very bad injector but I doubt that.

Could be an exhaust leak. Mine is leaking really bad (around the header, I think) and sounds like it's going to rattle itself apart.

Well Flash319 the engine in a carburated ..We replaced the head gasket on it when we re-done the timing because it was mixing oil with the water and we got it done and it still rattled just as bad it just didnt mix and more oil and water then it started back and may have even started rattleing harder DO you think it may just be a bad head on the engine...I hate to replace the engine because like i stated above it runs and sounds great with a strian on it...

Brian thanks for the thought but its not leaking any the motor is quite but the rattle isnt if you know what i mean....

well if you don't have a stethoscope, things will get difficult. I chased a mystery tap with my rebuild for the longest time and i finally isolated it and killed it. Heres what i did, hope it helps.
Valve adjustment screws,
Valve tap (valve seats loudly and might need rebuild)
Valve guide (mine was broken)
Lean Knock (might have detonation or not .. i didn't)
Main Bearing/Rod
Piston Slap

It seems to help me to go about things systematically. Make a list or sumthin' and check one off at a time as you go through. It can still be what you think it's not. good luck

this is an old post ,might help you and any reply might help me too

Hi
Whenever i reach 2000-2100 rpm there is a rattling sound coming from the left side of the engine (driver side). As soon as i go under or over this exact rpm range the rattle disappear completly ... idling or driving it doesnt matter.
The sound seem to be stronger when the engine is cold, and at first the noise was only present when starting cold then disappear when hot. Now its always present no matter what, but like i said only in the 2000-2100 rpm range.

Something i found was that when i listen with a "stetoscope" (long screw driver to my ear) the sound in question seems to be verry present right in this pipe (see picture) near the manifold. What is this part for ??? Any idea ?? Anyone???
THANX for any reply

Try running a little heavier weight oil (like 15W-40)
