Okay, I know we've all done it - using the wrong tool(s) for a job because we didn't want to buy an expensive SST that would only get used maybe once every couple years. But, what SSTs make a job so much easier that it's worth the money even if you do just use them every now and then? Or, what SST are cheap enough that everyone should have (snap-ring pliers, brass drift, etc.)?

 

really, and i mean really depends on the job... little ball joint press is great. bearing pullers. TIG welding machine. a lift is a must for my next shop, and a transmission jack is really great. all the air tools and grinders. and a damn good torque wrench and FSM.

 

If the jobs too hard, your not using the right tools.

That said, outside of a good assortment of quality tools the only thing that really sticks out to me right now is a special socket to fit the wheel bearing nuts on your 4WD.

 

I work in a shop day in and out, we dont have many specialty tools. If you can make it work your good to go, if not buy the danged tool. Bu there is nothing much you cant do with a few good quality socket sets, a good set of wrenches and an air ratchet and impact gun in 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2.

Also most helpfull imho are extensions and those wobbly sockets..

 

Wobbly's rock Stubby and ratcheting combo wrenches are sweet. Locking extensions can be a very nice thing as well.

Oh i forgot.. my favourite SST is a guy in the shop (hes small and can get in those terrible areas lol).. like today i did a tuneup on a ford 5.4 v8 and the last plug passengers side was a major PITA I just called over my SST coworker and he got his tiny hands in there within a few mins lol

 

- OTC Slide hammer set

- 54mm hub socket

Other SST that I spent money on that I at least found useful
- the flange holding tool (have someone make one)
- the front crank pulley holder thingie
- the pilot bearing remover (and install driver)
- rear pinion gear puller

I have a ton of other SST.
Made life easier but no so easy on the wallet.

Basically I save NO money compared to having a shop do the work, I spent alot of time workingon the truck and all I have to show for it are some neato SSTs...

 

Dont get me wrong, we have specialty tools but most of the time we can make it work. Them wobblys come in HANDY!!! and you wont find impact grades at sears, home depot or lowes..gotta be snap on mac or matco... $$$ but so worth it..

Cordless impacts are also worth it, love them things b/c you dont need the stinking hose..
