This isnt for now, but for a future mod i want to put on my truck. iv heard the snorkel is good for obvious reasons of relocating the intake so it wont drown the motor if in high enough water, but also creates better on-road performance because it draws in clean air from higher in the air rather than the more dirty pollution closer to the road from "dinky-cars".

Iv seen a bunch on first gen 4runners. i know you can make ghetto ones from pvc pipe, but of the ones that you can buy, which kit's are either made for or will fit the first gen 4runner, and how much am i looking at to buy one of these. Depending on the prices this mod may showup sooner than later on my ride.

 

The only snorkel kit that I am aware of is ARB's. I don't know which engine is in your runner, but for the 1st gens, it is ONLY made for the 22RE. This doesn't mean that it can't be adapted for a 3VZ-E. Several people have done this.

Here is the rub.....You want to put a 5VZ-FE in your runner. The snorkel will be on the wrong side for this engine. Maybe you should step back and think about your engine swap before you decide to cut any holes in your fender.

Dont you have to totaly waterproof your engine?because i have heard of vehicles getting hydro locked even with one on?

 

just spray a bunch of WD-40 on the alternator, put a light silicone paste over the spark plug wires and distributor cap, thus waterproofing the electrical stuff. when your done playing in the drink, spray your whole engine with WD-40, and spray the alternator pretty good. then let it sit for awhile until everything dries.

 

I wish I knew all this before I played in the mud hole. Now I need a new alternator and maybe even a head gasget.

 

I don't know if 2.5' would make a difference on poluted air, But it does bring in slightly cooler air. Distributor motors aren't the best things to run under water, not to mention all the other things it can ruin. Snorkels do look cool though. I plan to do one in the future.

 

Isn't WD-40 a petroleum distillate? Not good for your rubber pieces (fuel, vacuum and air hoses).

 

The best thing to clean your alternator with after submerging it or soaking it in mud is with Lectra Motive cleaner you can buy at any auto parts store. It's specifically for electric motor parts like alternators, starters, distributors, etc....it's safe to use and will do a good job cleaning out any gunk in these parts. Follow the directions on the can and you're good to go. I keep a couple of cans in my trail spares box whenever I'm offroading.

 

Ya, wd40 will eat away any rubber or silicone seals over time.

For your snorkel.... And I found simple green cleans a lot of things... and it has a very out doorsey smell to it...

 

$300 for a snorkle? It better have a vacuum breaker, a water trap and a blond with big boobs to install it for that price.

That's actually a good price when compared to snorkels for other trucks out there. Some get as high as $500 or so.

They're worth whatever a buyer wants to pay for them though. But yeah, there are other options instead of paying $300-$400, or more.

 

65 bucks for the snorkel head from 4x4 connection, and about 50 bucks or less in ABS pipe, fittings, ABS glue, a piece of sheetmetal for support and some nice textured spraypaint and you got a snorkel.

The one on my t100 people compliment and ask where I got it. All of them thought i bought it..

 

The guy on this website actually did a pretty slick job using an ARB snorkel head, and some ABS routed under the front fender. I'd like to do this as well, but I don't see that he has a step by step write up on his site. Anyways, you can see the pics of it here:

If you want to buy one, then I believe ARB is about the only one for 1st and 2nd gen. trucks.
