22RE tranny swap possible?

Ok here's my issue. My sister totaled her 89 2wd earlier this year and since then I've let her use my 88 4wd. Both are 5 speed manual. It looks like the tranny is giving out on the 88 now. Gears are grinding and it won't engage so I'm told.
Will the 89 tranny work in the 88 or do I look to get a rebuild? I've never opened up a tranny before so I'm not sure what I could do myself.

Thanks for any help guys!
Oh both engines are the 22RE...

Transmission Swap

Same motors .......close in year .........I would say its a direct swap but would call the Dealer and have them confirm that the tranny is inter-changeable to be on the safe side , if the mounting and bellhousing are the same (engines the same ) , slave cylinder in same place, starter on same side , and length of tranny is the same then it should be a go , measure and make sure your Tranny Mount on the crossmember is the same distance back and outside of that you would want to verify the spline on the driveshaft yolk is the same (dealer or someone here should be able to tell you that).
Dealer could tell you all that in one call though because he should (parts guy) be able to look up years and verify the same 5 spd tranny was used for both years

the 2wd and 4x4 trans are different. so to use the 2wd trans you will have to remove the transfer case and front drive shaft and switch out to the 2wd trans cross member and rear drive shaft. plus there could be more but im half asleep right now.

I'm sure it's possible. I can't really see why not.

4wd tranny with 22RE are G58 with chain driven VF1A t-case and W56 with gear drive RF1A t-case. Not too familiar with the 2wd tranny. Pretty sure it won't work without major modification or possible adapter...maybe MarlinCrawler or Inchworm? Probably not worth the money to mod...better to rebuild or have someone do it in the end.

the tranny in the 88 is a w56b with a top shift tcase. not sure about the 2wd in 89 in 4x4 they went to a w56c with a forward shift tcase both shifters in the same top loader but the internals are the same. not sure if they went to a newer tranny in 2wd in 89. just get a rebuild kit they are $262 from marlin with syncros. check the clutch to see if it is working right i might not be disegaging all the way causing the gears to grind.

Transmission Swap/Transfer Case

And if it is grinding regularly then please park it (if you plan on rebuilding that is), because all that grinding equates to more money and damage (it hurts me to think of the pain) to your box .
