Question Really bad exhaust smell

My exhaust has always been bad, but I always thought it was because its an old engine. Now I'm not so sure.

It occured to me the other day that there might be something wrong. There is no coloration and it always passes instpection, but why does it smell so bad? Thanks yall.

I'm assuming it has a cat. on it? That's what's stinking. It's common to get a rotten egg smell from it.

I'm not sure that its the rotten egg smell. Its the typical old car exhaust smell, just alot worse.

Would it pass inspection with a bad cat?

They usually just get plugged when they're bad, and then your vehicle just wouldn't run or it would start acting up.

it might just be running rich... many things can cause this but have you replaced or checked your 02 sensors in a while? they can get dirty and preform a little sluggish.. does it pass inspection just barley? the cat might be going bad as well... once i get some money i am going to get some downey headers high flow cat and run 2.5in exhaust and just open it up... and of course change the sensors.

I just got a thorley header(I'm very impressed by the way). Could that have anything to do with it? Or is it just coincedence that I realized the smell now?

Exhaust Smell

LOL , wear breathing protection !!
Maybe your new headers are baking your cat (is that legal...baking cat) , who knows but like previous post usually mixture changes can drastically change the final result after cat smell , I would imagine that the headers have changed something in regards to your motor (problably running a bit cooler) and with the onset of cool weather , well who knows hehe .
Take her down the highway in 4th for a spell and maybe when you come back it will be normal , could be just the headers burning in or off as it may be .
