remove it, sand it, prime it, paint it, clear it.

I just did mine last month in black metallic.
1.) You have to rough it with some fine grit sandpaper.
2.)Thoroughly clean it, very important!
3.) Rattle-can of plastic primer, has to be FOR plastic, 2-3 coats (bought at Lowes)
4.) Rattle-can of color, 2-3 coats (nothing special, thats why the primer is so important, it adheres to the plastic and lets you spray anything on it)
5.) Rattle-can of clear, 2-3 coats (optional, but really helps)
This works, I drove my truck a few hours after the last coats were applied and parts were re-installed in the rain, it still looks awesome, no touch-ups!
Good Luck and have fun, sanding really sucked!
I sanded until it was very dull, it isn't necessary to remove all of the chrome because the process for chroming plastic is different than chroming metal.

Yeah, I did this a year or two ago, cant remember. I still do not even need any touchups. I used the high quality rustoelum out of the silver can. Sand with ~500 grit paper, clean with acetone, or other solvent, primer nice and even, dry it, then a few LIGHT coats of black.

wooo damn i had a holiday with this one. the chrome was wearing off towards the top when i decided to do it. i ended up using a razor blade and peeling the chrome layer off. ended up cutting my hand about 50 times..that chrome layer is sharp as sheet. anyways, that's the best way to do it, but as far as methods go, try a different route if you like how your hands look. after i got it off it was simple. high grit sanded it, followed by low grit sanding (polish/smoother). primed then double coated with rustoleum gloss black....i'm sure you can find a pic in my sig that highlights it. good luck!
