Hello,

This is my first post to the forum. I just purchased a 99 limited v6 with e-locker about a month ago. Truck has 108k on it. I have noticed that sometimes after coming to a complete stop as I let off the brake I feal a "pop" or clunk before I start to accelerate. It feels like its the rear brakes hanging up for a split second. I took it to a brake shop and they said everything was fine with the brakes. It doesn't happen everytime, but its enough to get on your nerves. I checked the fluid level in the tranny and its fine. The condition of the fluid based on visual and smell seam to be fine also. Any suggestions or has anyone else experienced this before? Could it be a u joint or driveshaft problem?

Do a search for "rear axle seal"...there should be a lot of info on it

 

Grease up your drive shaft and try searching.

i used such easy words as , stop , bump, tranny

Rear axle seals cause the rear drum brake to stick. Get them replaced and new brake shoes and you'll be golden. Lubing the drive shaft might take some of the clunk away but if it is truly the rear axle seals then it'll still be there.

 

thanks for the replys. I checked out some of the other threads that were referenced. I guess I could try greasing the slip yoke and u joints??

I may just get the dealer to check it out when I go to get the timing belt changed.

Truck is an auto.

 

If it were the rear axle seals would there not be visable evidence that they were leaking??

 

I can almost guarantee that greasing slip yoke will fix your problem.

Truthfully mine showed very little evidence and the truck only had 49k miles. As soon as I got new axle seals, bearings, and brake shoes It was as good as new. (Extended Warranty covered!)

 

Anyone have any pics showing where to grease? I know that sounds dumb, but is the slip yoke located right behind the transfer case?

I have a grease gun and I could probably do it myself, but not sure which type and how much grease to use. I currently have some marine grade synthetic in the gun. Any recommendations?

 

There are zerk fittings on all the joints on the drive shafts..you can't miss them.

I took the 4runner to the local dealership today to have it serviced. I made sure to tell them to grease the various fittings. I really had my doubts about it making a difference, but it has. I drove the truck roughly 15 miles and I barely felt the bump one time. I had numerous stoplights and stop signs and it was smooth as silk. Its amazing what a little service will do .

 

I think after servicing it, it takes a little bit of driving for the grease to "settle". or go to the places it has to go to. I could be wrong, but I DID stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
