to simply answer your question, the 22r and the 5vz v6 are the engines to have. I haven't owned a 3vz, but i hear they're s*it.

a 5speed is for me, but I don't talk on a phone and drive, or worry about clutch life. a 5speed can be more fun, but my automatic (on a '97 5runner) hasn't given me any problems (163,000 miles) but I also keep the fluids fresh & maintain my vehicles...

maybe one of these guys will hook us up with some FSM's (or whatever the service manuals are called)

ive owned the 3vz in my 92 runner and i currently have the 5vz in my current runner and love it. my dad had the 22re in his 88 pickup and it was peppier so to say than my 3vz in my first 4runner. gas mileage will be a factor either way unless you stick with the 22re.

depending on your driving conditions (commuter, wheeler, 2nd vehicle) will depend on the tranny you want. my 4runner now is an auto and i havent had any problems with it (167k), but its all a matter of what you want and what your conditions are gonna be driving.

hope that could help you
