I just purchased a 4x4 1990 V6 Automatic 4Runner and the transmission will not move the truck in 2 HIGH or 4 HIGH. If the transfer case is in 4 LOW you can go forward or reverse no problem.

I think this truck has the A340H transmission. Anyone have any ideas as to what I can try to fix this?

I took the solenoids out today and put power to them. All 4 made a click sound. Does that mean there working correctly or does that just mean they click and may not work?

I'm thinking this tranny is toast and I really hate to put money into a POS Automatic when I could have a bullet proof 5 speed .

I may be wrong, but if it was the tranny that was shot, it wouldn't matter where the t-case was. The tranny comes first (engine-tranny-tcase-diff), therefore, the power must pass through in order to move the truck. It's doing this, because 4low works. I would focus on the t-case as the problem.

 

From my understanding, if the truck will move in 4LOW it's because it multiples the power enough to get the vehicle moving.

Have you checked the adjustment on the shift linkage? Will it start in the neutral position?

I did check both and they seem correct. If the truck is in neutral it will start.

Unplug the computer for the tranny and do a manual shift. It should be under the radio, in the front part of the console. 1 will be 1st, 2nd will be Drive/3rd and D will be overdrive. You loose 2nd gear because the shift solenoids are not turning off and on.

 

On these the ECT ECU is built into the main ECU. Thanks for the idea.

 

ive built a coulpe a these i belive u have an automatic t case does the transfer case have a pan just like the transmission . the transfer case in these is built just like a 2 speed transmission it has a valve body clutch packs and pump . a comon failure is the bushing in the high range drum wears out and cuts in to the sealing rings exahausting the apply pressure and frying the cluthes id say u need to have the t case rebuilt but since it shares fluid and pressure with the trans most shops wont do it un less u get both built

 

You are correct about the t-case having a pan.

 

have u tryed reversing it then trying to put it in 4/2wd somtimes my manual dose that but it wil go into 4wd but not 2wd or u would try pushing it back?

 

I have worked on the 340H and I suggest the obvious:
-Fluid at correct level, hot, idling and on level ground? They are sensitive to fluid levels....very sensitive.
-Filter clear?
-Valve body bolts tight?
-Delay shift cable smooth and free? Pull it from throttle body to check.

Put a can of Trans-X or SeaFoam in it to see if it will free up a sticking component....tons of them in the valve body. I would put it in, put the runner in drive, put on the parking brake and let it idle for quite a while in drive. Then after an hour of getting really warm, go drive it in what ever gear gets it moving. You may get lucky. Otherwise, as stated, if the clutch packs are worn out, no amount of effort will fix that except a rebuild. The overdrive drum and carbon rings, as stated previously, wear out and don't transfer pressure well to the clutch packs.

That's all I can think of. The transmission has an ungodly number of parts with the integral transfer case. You may want to look for a used one. I expect it will cost $3000 to pull, rebuild, replace and fine tune.
