I have found a rear axle complete with a Toyota e-locker for sale in my area. The guy wants $500 for it. Is this a fair price? What should I look for if I plan on buying it? I'm thinking of using the Downey http://www.downeyoff-road.com/Chassi...s/Lockers.html (scroll to bottom) to activate it. Any opinions? My other option is to go with an ARB but that would cost more.

 

Get the e-locker but don't use the cable. I've read a lot of negative stuff about cable actuation. There are instructions to wire your own electrical switch to activate. Inchworm Gear sells the electrical wiring also if you don't want to do any soldering.

 

It's a fair price. I paid $460 for mine. I would suggest wiring it up as well. If you can get the lockers computer for cheap it makes life much easier as well.

 

i dont exactly know what would be so bad about using the cable....(perfect oppurtunity for someone to chime in with a reason) using the cable would make it just like an ox locker not to bad if u ask me

 

That's a fair price I just recently picked one up for my 4runner for a little less than $500 (including the wiring from the locker to the body).
I haven't heard anything about using a cable system but I know inchworm offers wiring for it.

From what I've read, it doesnt work very well out of the box. Takes some modifying to get it working properly.

 

I just talked to Downey. Their original version was dash mounted. The cable was twice as long and would have to do a 180* loop to mount. The newer version is a lever that mounts on the door sill. They said that they have had no complaints since the change.

 

in that case if your leaning to the cable i would try it out. if it doesnt work out well u know you could wire it up.

 

From what I heard it had nothing to do with the cable. It was the bracket that mounted to the diff. The holes were not lined up properly or something and you had to drill it out and use some new bolts.

 

Gerdo, do a search on Pirate4x4 in the Toyota section and you'll find lots of guys who tossed their cable setups.The would get stuck or were very difficult to use to actuate. I recall one guy saying he just carries a big flat screwdriver and crawls under his truck to activate his locker rather than use the cable. My 2 cents. Do it electrically.
