Question New '84 4 Runner... idle?

Hi everyone, I just bought my first 4Runner and I am having idling issues. (22r) It runs fine but I was told by the smog station it needs to be lower. It runs between 1200 and 1500. I figure about 700rpm or so. I've adjusted the idle screw all the way out and there is absolutley no change in idle. Does anyone have any ideas?

TIA!!! Cari

Aye. I would remove the air cleaner to make sure that every-single-vacuum hose is attached somewhere. Having one of the thousands of hoses come detached can throw you off big time. I HATE smog.

How is the fuel/air mixture screw? I noticed that the idle screw was more responsive after screwing with the mixture screw The general rule of thumb for mixture screws is 3 and a quarter turns back from the seat. Then I mess with the idle screw. Anyway, best of luck! Keep us posted.

Standard: 700 RPM
Auto: 750 RPM

Make sure its the idle screw that your adjusting. If i adjust my idle screw, the idle goes up or down. You have a book that tells you that the screw your adjusting is the idle screw? Factory Service Manual. good luck, keep us posted

I think mine idles between 700-750, its a 22r manual, but its also got a Weber carb. The PO did a great job on the truck, but one of the things I was hesitant about was the fact that it only has one vac line. All the emissions are removed and its got the Weber carb, headers, no cat. So here's the reason I mention this: while driving back to TX, I was getting just under 20 MPG(closer to 22 when corrected for the tires) and it runs great! I didn't get it smog'd but I got it registered and inspected, and next year it will be exempt.

The engine bay is really cleaned up without all of the vac lines, BUT, I think it also causes my truck to run hot, and that's what I am dicking with now.

Good luck with the idle, just throwing some additional info your way. let us know what happens.

Yeah there are 2 screws on the right side of the carb and you want to adjust the one on top. They are easy to spot because they have a spring behind the head of the screw. Good luck with your new Toy! Are you planning to do any mods?

Thanks! Ok so I took the air filter and cover off and there was a couple hoses not plugged in. We plugged those in and adjusted it again. The idle is now at about 800. And I have heard the the air mixture screw is sealed and I can't mess with it. Does that hold true for the '84 22r? Last but not least what is that second screw that is slightly behind and under the idle screw?

And yes i do plan on mods! I have a 3" suspension lift, 31" tires, custom bumpers and the next project after smog is rockers.

There is a huge list of stuff i want to do!

Yeah the mixture screw should be plugged on yours. The second screw adjusts the fast idle for the choke.
