I just rolled my 85 4runner this weekend and picked up a 89 with a V6 motor. Will the toyota v6 motor bolt to a 22re 4 cylinder transmission? I have a dual t case in my 85 4runner that I want to keep.

The 4cyl tranny won't directly match the V6... but you can get a V6 adapter for your dual 4cyl cases.

Then you'd have V6, R150, Marlin adapter, 1st 4Cyl case, doubler, 2nd 4cyl case. I have assumed you have a manual.

The R150 has a 23 spline output however, and Marlin recommends running 23 spline gears throughout a dual case behind a V6. If you have dual 21 spline cases, you might have some problems or need to buy some new gears.

I don't think I would ever swap a 3.0 into anything ... 4 cyl power with V8 fuel economy!

The V6 tranny is much stronger than your 4cyl tranny. I would upgrade your tcases to work behind the V6 tranny.

Keep in mind, you are looking at some good money to put dual 4cyl cases behind a V6. You should do some pricing first, and see if the V6 4Runner truly is the most cost effective way to go.

For example, the V6 adapter from Marlin costs $350, and one 23 spline input gear is going to run you $159. Probably more parts you'll need as well.

 

The 3.0 V6 is well known for its low output and thirst for fuel. To "fix" one (say make more power), you make the other (in this case fuel economy) even worse yet ... by comparison, you can quite easily build a 22RE to make the power the V6 makes and still have better gas mileage.

 

i thought you meant to say 8 cyl power with 4 cyl fuel, because every 4 cyl car i owned got alot better mpg better than the 8 cyls

This may be the most succinct, accurate statement about the stock 3.0 I've ever heard!

 

As I read it
-- the 85 is trashed
-- the 89 will be your ride
-- you want to swap the dual case from the 85 to the 89...

Is the 89 an auto or a manual?

To keep the 89 body, motor and frame and have a manual trans you have to get
-- 3VZ manual trans and bell (unless the 89 already has that) - better known as an R150 trans
-- Marlin Crawler Adapter
-- Marlin Crawler 23 spline upgrade for the existing dual cases
-- possibly a new trans cross member...
