96 4 runner tranny swap question

My 4runner has 185,000 miles and I've just replaced the tranny with a 2000 tranny with 60,000 miles. So far the only issue is a rough shift when put into drive. BTW, both trannies are automatic. All other shifts are shifts are fine including rev, neut, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc... Any ideas? Thanks.

Did you change the fluids and filter?

Yes the fluid was changed and the filter was cleaned. What else can it be if that is not the issue? Does the tranny need any adjustments?

It cost me $1000 even for tranny and install. I was told that it was a 4x4. I'm going to go check right now.

The 00 and 96 tranys are different....Different controls, different shift points, and different electronics. Where did you get the tranny from?

I got it from a part out. Ok so what do I need to know if the trannies are different. Obviously it fit and I have been driving it for over 1000 miles. The only issue I see is that moving from park to drive gives a little jolt but nothing major just a little more than expected and when it switches from 1st to 2nd too. Other than that the upper gears are smooth shifts. What do you suggest?

BTW, it is a 4wd.

I will talk to a buddy of mine who has alot of experience in interchangeable parts. Will post what I find out tomorrow. You may have to change out some computer controls from old one to work correctly.
Thanks

'Electronic Controlled Transmission' Could have something to do with it since it moves the shift points if the 96 has a different set on points.

It talks about the different options. www.car-part.com only lists transmissions up to 1999 that will work on the 96. I will ask my buddy tomorrow and post as I said.

Ok I visited the site and it looks like the 2000 model tranny is not compatible with anything but a 2000 and in a couple cases a 99. Interesting. I hope that website is incorrect. Thanks for your help on that helpful site.

FYI, I've been driving the 4runner and so far so good...except a little bit of a rough shift it seems fine. In fact this weekend I drove it with the wife and kids from San Antonio to S. Padre Island (over 650 miles total) and had no issues other than those mentioned. I'll update with anything new.
