auto hub swap

I have an 1986 4runner with manual hubs. I have access to a 1991 (I believe) parts truck with auto hubs. Can these swap into my truck? My driveway is long, steep, and rocky. The road at the end of my driveway is a two lane hwy. So every morning, I have to get out to free my hubs at the top of my driveway. I need auto hubs. I can have anything I want off of the donar truck for free, so is there anything else worth grabbing that would be a nice upgrade?

can put them in easily but your diff/driveshaft will turn. in the ADD equipped trucks, the front diff has a vacuum actuated engagement so that the two sides are disengaged. front axles/CV's still spin, they just don't spin the front driveshaft. If you truly want auto hubs you will want the entire front end and you'll need someway of manually triggering the vacuum ports for engage/disengage. If it is that big of a deal just get a newer 4Runner

Keep your manual hubs. I put them on my ADD truck. Less wear on the CV joints and better power/fuel economy. If you really want shift on the fly then just leave them locked and leave the transfer case in 2wd. Getting out to turn the hubs forces you to evaluate the terrain and also you should air down at the same time

I'd say its not worth it, just keep your manual hubs and leave them locked all the time and let the front drive shaft spin in 2wd. As long as you keep the u-joints lubed up it won't hurt anything. Putting on the ADD hubs will be the same as locking your manual hubs.

If you want a true auto hub you need to get it from an 85-89 4runner or 85-88 pickup. My 87 had them and I personally would have rather had manual hubs. You unlock them by backing up in 2wd and lock them by driving forward in 4wd. You can?t shift into 4wd on the fly with them. There is always a lag time in them locking and the front wheels have to actually be spinning for the hubs to engage. Some times when you back up in 4wd they will disengage at first then suddenly engage. All in all they suck for wheeling and they?re great for the soccer mom who doesn?t want to get out in the snow the lock the hubs.

Like everyone else has suggested I would just leave the hubs you have now locked in all the time.

ya, keep the manuals. the only swap you'd want to do is ADD to manual.

That's what I thought. That's what I was doing until my cousin told me that it would tear up my front running gear. So nothing will be damaged by this? Will my gas mileage suffer? I never bothered to check my MPG, when I was leaving them locked.

Auto hubs are total junk and do not work in reverse...keep the manual hubs and take 30 seconds to switch the manual ones at the end of your driveway or just switch from 4WD to 2WD and don't sweat it.

almost everybody on this site has or wants to get rid of ADD and auto for manual. yet you are going backwards. keep what you got. you have the best option out. i paid 75 bucks for what you already have.
