Transmission behaved odly this morning.. worse to come ??
I have a 98 V6 Auto 4WD with 138k. No SC or has it ever been SC'd. I got it with 120k and before I bought it, I checked the ATF dipstick which was at the full level and the ATF was red and bright.
Fast forward to this morning, ambient temps were high (75 deg) but it held on in 3rd for about 1/4 mile like it does when its cold out. When it finally dropped down, it was a hard shift.
I got to the light and I could definitely hear a whining out of the trasnmission at idle I gassed up and sat on the forecourt for a while but the noise was gone. I drove away slowly with windows down and no noise.
I had to drop it off at the body shop this morning ( a little careless wheeling = a new fender + fender flare
) and I checked the fluid quickly. It may be low.
I will check the fluid properly when I get it back from the body shop.
Anyone have similar issues ??? I am on the top of the slippery slope to a new tranny or a rebuild ??
Thanks
David

This is in line with my theory that it was oil starvation at start up.
My job this weekend is to drop the pan, replace the filter and replace the fluid. I will not be powerflushing due to the well documented problems on powerflushing high mileage transmissions with unknown service/fluid history.
