3.0 is dead. What now?
Well the 3.0 is dead so what now? I'm getting called stupid by some of the guys I wheel with for considering swapping a 4cylinder in. I dont want to go for a v8 and would rather go with a better v6 than the 3.0. I know theres the 4.3 which gets about the same mileage as a v8, Buick v6's and the 3.4. Im looking for a round about price and difficulty level for each swap.

3.4 is what most around here would suggest. A 4cyl swap is interesting... with the right gearing it would wheel as well as your guys that are calling you stupid and it might get better fuel economy... worth a thought. 22RE or a 2.7 swap would be cool

3.4L would be the best Toyota option, you could probably do a chevy 4.3L for cheaper though.

dunno. u had one. would u want another one? personally i dig the 22re, but thats just cause thats all ive ever know as far as yota truck engines go. the 3.4 sounds like fun, and supposedly isnt half bad any way ya look at it, but theres also quite a few people goin with the lexus v8 i believe? might be worth lookin into. then u can call ur buddies stupid for not havin a big engine like u. woo

I decided to go for the 3.4 swap because it is difficult and expensive to find a PROPERLY rebuilt 3.0 (and I didn't feel that I had the right situation to do it myself - no garage). Since that is what I was presented with, I figured that the extra money that the 3.4 would cost me (over the proper 3.0), was relatively minimal, for a good power and milage gain.
I've put over 5,000 miles on my 3.4 since I got it going, and it is a wonderful improvement over the 3.0. Significantly better drivability, and about 25% better gas milage than my 3.0 got. You wouldn't go wrong with that decision!

Well I dont have the knowledge or experience to go wiring up a motor. Nor do I have the money to pay someone to do it. I wasn't really disappointed with my 3.0's power even with 170,000 miles on it (before the knock). I think If I did weasy cams, bigger valves, the ecu chip and an exhaust I'd be happy. Plus I'm gonna be geared damn good with 4.88's and 36's so I wont be loosing any power there. Honestly I'm shooting for 180 ft/lb's I dont know if I'll hit that or not. Maybe I should browse into stroking it with a 3.4 crank

Bigger displacement, more power
Better mileage
Takes up less space in the engine bay
Oh - and you won't be geared anywhere near optimal with 36's and 4.88 - you're looking at 5.71's to do it right.
