Beside the money issue, you're better off going to 3.4 engine instead of 22R. If you think the 3.0 is slow, with the 22R, you gonna need people to push you off from signal lights especially with automatic trans.

atleast get the newer 2.7 engine, it's a 4 banger with similar power as the 3.0

Bell Housing

You should only need to change to a 4 Cyl Auto Bellhousing.
Most V6's Auto have V6 cast on the bottom :-) of the BH.
If you can find one, I had an auto 87 22RE 4Runner with just a 272 cam
and punched .030 it was not bad with 35x14.50 Tbirds but
looking back I would keep the motor stock and put the DOA metal
Chain Guides and hammer the motor. They are hard to kill!

The main thing is the older runners were a lot lighter than the 89-95's.
I drive a 95 4Runner 22RE 5spd and I don't think I will ever get rid of it.
I call it the Turtle, It is Green, and Slow but finishes the race.

The 3.4 costs way more than my $250 22R swap.

I am going to be doing the same thing, pulling the 3.0 and putting
in a 22R in 1990 4Runner. I got it dirt cheap and I think I hate the 3.0
more than anyone else, I have six 22r's in the garage so the supply helps!

ToyotaGuru Are you saying that you have put a 3.0 tranny mated up to a 22re with just swapping over the bell housing ?
