Which is the best deal?
Since I sold my 87 we've been looking for another daily driver. My wife wants a 99 Jetta but I've never delt with them before and am hearing bad things so I found these. I am leaning towrds the 95 which has a new motor with paperwork and has a small dent by the tail light and about a 1' crease in the dr side door, no biggie though. I just found the 94 and will go look at both today. The 94 has 150,*** with 10,000 on the rebuild.

either go for a yota or honda, you will get much better MPG and I know I would want to get the best MPG for a daily driver. I have known two people that had jettas, not sure of the years, but one was a lemon, kept breaking down over and over again. the other one he did not keep it past a year cause he did not like it.

I hate to say this but a V6 4Runner is not a good daily driver vehicle since you will be lucky to get 15mpg in city driving. You already have 2 4runners.
Is your wife going to be driving it or you?

Everyone I know with a VW or Audi (same engines) have had nothing but trouble with them. They look ok, but are just not reliable cars. Plus they cost more to fix than a Japanese car.
As as the runners you found, may I suggest you find a 96 and get the 3.4L V6 instead of the 3.0. I think you would be happier with a 3rd gen.

I know i would like the 3.4 better but I only have the $5,000 from the 87 to play with right now. I have had a 91 runner and it was nice but the previous owner had abused the engine so I had to put some work into it. I would be driving i mostly. I did find a 96 runner with the 3.4 with 168,000 on it for $5,500 obo so I want to look at it on Wednesday if I don't find something else soon. We're down to 1 car right now as my formula has the new engine sitting next to it.

I had a Jetta & a Golf GTI back in the 80s. They were pretty good, but the Japanese cars beat the pants off them in reliability & fuel economy. The only area the VW's were better was the steering was a LOT more precise (poor man's BMW)...
I've owned two Honda Civics & they were the most reliable autos I've ever had.

Yeah, the deal on the Jetta fell through anyway so we're not going to look at anymore of them. We need a 5 seater for the kids too.

Definently get the 3.4 over the 3.0 or 2.4 Just too much to deal with to get a simple power increase. If it were i, id get the 96, throw in dual arbs, a crawler box a lift 33s and skids and call it the ultimate D.D.

I'm not too concerned about mileage as I was just driving the 87 daily and it got between 18-25 mpg's deoending on how I drove it. The 95 from above had rust all over and the engine was actually just swapped in from a different runner, so I was going to look at the 94 and it sold while I was looking at the 95.

Don't bash yourself for that, go to http://www.autotrader.com and you'll see lots of 2nd toyota 4runner.
