Need a advice for choosing a router for cable modem.

I have a Linksys WRT54G... It's dyin, can't connect to internet...first I thought my ethernet card but if I plug cable right into cable modem..it works. So make me think that it's router problem.

I need a router that I can use for games, P2P programs and max out my router's performance.

What is the best Wireless-G (802.11g) router that you can recommend?
Linksys? D-link? if so what model should I buy?

Whatever you do don't buy a D-Link.

Before you go and buy a new router, try and update the firmware on it first.

Also before you buy power cycle the cable modem. Leave it powered down for around a half min. The Modem will log the mac address its connected to. and if that doesnt get reset, the modem will not allow another ip out to a new mac address.

i had a wrt54g back home and it was fine but now we have a wrt54g here and it constantly just drops us off the internet. the cable modem still gets its connection but the connection stops at the router and leaves us hanging. the firmware can't be upgraded (it says it finished upgrading, but the version still stays the same...v1.0), ive cycled power, done hard resets, everything, the router has simply crapped out.

make sure you router isn't cloning a mac address. doing so you run a higher risk of not getting an ip or causing a interment connection. It can mess up routing and or if you match someone in your subnet, only one mac address will connect and be given an ip.
all though that option gets handy if you are faced with that. Some network devices do get shipped with matching mac addresses. And linksys and d-link and who ever else never reports it. If you have an old nic or router around that is not being used. clone its mac address. If not Change one of the numbers up one, and use trial and error.
I see this every now and again on our cable network.

My Netgear is doing the exact same thing. I have tried powercycling it and even tried going on to the internet site but it will no longer recognize my password. I have even tried reloading it with the cd it came with.

I have owned three Linksys WRT54G routers. I purchased the fourth one (model 4) and used DD-WRT router firmware. It's brick proof. The earlier models had problems stemming from dropped connections to Ethernet controller failing.

ALink 101 and ALink + are the worst. Followed by D-Link. A reasonable deal is Buffalo. Also, consider using a Motorola "surf" cable modem. Mine is a 5100 series and works like a charm. I had a linksys version it was horrible (dropped connections and random resets).
