im wondering if a new shiftser bushing would help this at all.

it is really hard to get into 1st, usualy i skip it because of this.
you must let the clutch out half way before it will go in reverse all the way.

it this just the tranny or would a new bushing help?

 

If you suspect the bushing, try slightly pulling up on the gear shift while shifting it into gear. If it works better, then it is probably the bushing. Is the shifter sloppy at all? Did you recently do any work to the clutch system?

 

I'm voting for shifter bushing. MarlinCrawler has a GREAT replacement that won't wear out a quickly as OEM.

 

I got my tranny from marlin and it came with the new poly seat and bushing and seem to be great pieces so you should look into those. However I am having the same problem with mine.

 

I talked to my Toyota mechanic friend and when I bought a 1980 2wd truck years ago and I had a hard time getting it in 1st and Reverse.
My mechanic friend told me to change my pressure plate and clutch.I did that repair and the problem went away.

 

it does have a little slop, but no more than any other toyota i have seen.

i just bought this 4runner, it looks as if the engine was recently replaced, its way to cleann for 180XXX miles. Im guessing the clutch might have been replaced as it grabs really good.

how good are marlin's clutch's?
where else can i get a good clutch for a ggood price that will last?

 

Maybe the slave or master clutch cylinders are bad. Does the clutch pedal feel firm and springy or is it soft and spongy? I would check everything else before you change the clutch if you think it is new. Marlin Crawler has some shift seat bushings that are better than OEM. Go to http://www.marlincrawler.com/htm/tra...rans_parts.htm and get both the shift seat bushing and the shifter socket if you decide to change it. He also sells AISIN OEM clutch cylinders if you change those.

If you decide to change the clutch, Marlin has good clutches. Anything AISIN/ASCO is OEM and will last a long time.

 

the clutch pedal is deffinately firm.

sitting still it works fine, it only does this when downshifting or leaving a stop sign.

 

It will normally be a little harder to get into first than other gears when downshifting unless you are going really slow. I usually double-clutch if I need to downshift to first. If you wait at a stop sign in neutral, it usually takes about a second with the clutch in before it will easily go into gear. That would be considered normal. Put in the clutch and wait about 1 second before putting it into gear before you leave a stop sign and it should make a diffence.
