Anyone know of a quick fix for steering stops that have been rubbed through to the bolt? Saw that they were torn when I was greasing all the zerks down there and was like AH HAH, thats what the creakin noise was at full crank...

I globbed some bearing grease on the bolts and plates, but haven't driven it yet cause it started rainin, so I dunno if that'll help in the slightest... Anyhoo, is there a quick little fix you can do until I have a chance to go pick up some new steering stops?

 

grease is what i did with mine, still creak tho cuz mine are worn right thru the plastic...ive been trying to thing of something myself, ill let you know if i come up with anything

 

screw 'em all the way in and they don't contact any more...THAT fixes 'em, permanently! They don't really do anything, anyway. You have a stop on the idler arm that bottoms out first.

 

Yeah, worn through the plastic was what I meant to say when I said rubbed through to the bolt... Brain fart lol.

Hmm... So greasin didn't help at all? How much are those steering stops? Heck, I could always just get two of those things you put on the bottom of chairs so they slide over hard floors w/o messin em up, and hotglue em on. Wonder if that'd work...

 

thats a really good idea...god and i was thinking about wrapping a lil duct tape around em, and the putting a ziptie to make sure it stays on...

 

Hmm. Might even shave a foot or more off my turnin radius too eh? Cause being able to do a u-turn on a residential street stock is nice, but heck if I can get a couple more feet of clearance even better!

 

Well... We can still work the duct tape idea in there somehow. Cause it just aint redneck-riggin without usin duct tape ya know?

 

with the proper amount of duct tape, you can fix about anything...

I always found antiseize worked on mine, grease seemed to last about a month, especially in the rainy season. The antisieze stopped the noise for 3-4 months.

 

Hah, thats a great sayin.

Best quick fix I ever did with duct tape was to hold a ujoint together to get me home. Used an entire roll on that damn thing. Actually worked too, though I didn't take it over 5mph. Then I realised when I got home I coulda just taken out the driveshaft, popped it in 4wd, and driven it. Haha...

 

Make sure you grease all 4. I only did the front two and was woundering why the hell they where still grinding/popping.

I did mine about a month ago, my right one is making a TINY bit of noise but other then that... not bad for a 2cent fix.

 

Rubber vacume plugs for a carb or hose work good

 

the hot glue would fall off.

maybe coat the heads in JB Weld?

 

I thought those little things were probably a good thing even though they make that horrible noise. I figured they are there to keep the idler arm and pitman arm from taking the brunt of rubbing.??? It seems that pressure from hard turns along with the jarring of bumps while in a turn couldn't be good for the idler and pitman.

Me, I just try not to turn so hard anymore. However, the plastic caps for the bump stops are cheap....4 of them. A cheaper/quick fix? I wonder how a length of heater hose slid over the bolts would work. Leave enough length to double the end over and back and secure it with duct tape. I'm going to try this and post my results tomorrow.

(EDIT: Either double the end over, or fill it the end with epoxy or JB weld. I'll try both....one method on either side)

 

Hah. Good man. I'd go try my idea myself, but today's my day off and I got an extreme case of the lazy kickin in. Too lazy to even get a beer outta the fridge. Been tellin my dog to go fetch beer for last half hour but I don't think he understands...

 

you need a mini fridge that doubles as a lil table, thats what i did...im still trying to teach the dog to bring me beers tho...
