ARGGGG:Broken Zerk

ok so i changed the oil today, cleaned off all the zerks, and began lubing up...so i pop on my grease gun, and put a few pumps into the zerk on the rear slip yoke...and then i try to pull it off, nope wont come off...wtf...ok pull a lil harder...nope still wont budge....pull a lil more boom it comes off....with the nipple of the zerk in it...so now the threads from the zerk fitting are still in there. im thinking now im either gonna have to drill it and retap, or do you think a craftsman screw out would work, or do you have a better idea.

also is it safe to drive say 10 or so miles right now to go get a new zerk, and the screw out?

I'd say that a 'screw out' would work, just go easy. you can get a replacement grease fitting at any Ace Hardware store.

Screw a little screw into the hole and assuming you got some grease in there before it broke, take your time and fix it when it's time to grease it again.

I'd feel safe driving it for a few thousand miles even with nothing in the hole at all too. Just remember, that if something else breaks from the neglect, it will break at the worst possible moment.

Yeah an easyout should get it out. Most likely its a 6mm zerk, I've found them at PepBoys before.

if you can get the broken fitting out without too much damage, just bring it with you to the parts store and find a comparable one. Or find a similar fitting on your truck that you can remove and take with you to the store.

Mine has an adjustment for the tightness of the tip, if it's too tight just back it off some (unscrew it).

i went to lube my ujoints a few months ago only to find that the zerk fitting had been sheared off. i have no idea when or how but i know it wasn't from wheeling (i haven't wheeled my pickup in a long time). anyways i tried to get the threads out but gave up and have been driving without a zerk fitting for close to six months. the ujoint is definitely telling me it's time to be replaced though. lots of vibration, clicking and clacking. will a ujoint actually break or will the vibration just get worse and worse?

Wow, I'd put some attention to that ASAP. I've seen guys seize up their ujoints at highway speeds and its not pretty.
