Question Excessive blow by, needs a rebuild, what weight oil will get me home?

About a month ago my 22re died after a 2 hour drive, too much blow by gunked up the brand new spark plugs (200km's old). Now I know it needs a rebuild but i was just wondering what is the thickest oil i can safely run in a 22re to cut down on blow by so i can attempt to make the 2 hr trip back home when exams are over. It has 10w30 in it now and in a 2hr drive ate a good two litres (hope the engine is still in rebuilding condition... if not oh well).

Any help would be great, im planning on tearing down the engine and really the whole 4runner this summer and trying to fix everything (it will be my first engine rebuild, first welding, first body job, first painting but should be intresting and if I pay someone else to do it when am I ever going to learn? I plan on diving in and taking it slow, so this summer I'll have to start a "re"build thread as I will have lots of questions!)

Thanks YT

20w-50 should be alright to get you home. You could run straight 50 weight if it's not too cold. dump some STP in there, too. That should cut down your blowby!

Bring extra oil and plugs with you and stop every 45 minutes or so to check the oil. If it dies then change the plugs. If it's eating that much oil, I'm not sure I would run it for two hours without checking the level no matter what oil I ran in it.

I've limped home on 20-50W and added a quart of that super-thick "engine no-smoke".. Basically I think you'll be OK. Try to keep the engine from loading up - that's when the rings take a lot of abuse.

Alright thats what I was thinking either 20w40 or 20w50, and i was planning on bringing spark plugs, thanks for your responses. If the moving truck has a hitch i'll be pulling it home on a dolly but if not shes going to have to make one last limp home before it undergoes some work.

You can go a range or two hotter on the plugs to help burn off all that oil, if you want to risk it ;D
