I have A 1989 DLX (22RE) pickup. I was thinking about putting in a cluster from a SR5. Is all I need a sending unit (oil/water) from a SR5?

I was also thinking about replacing all my gauges with Autometers. I'll have a panel made to replace the cluster and install the gauges in the same location as the factory. Will my speedo cable attach directly to the speedometer?

If you go autometer, you'll need to replace all the sensors, add a tach adapter, and it's very unlikely that the speedo cable will work.

Typically you need an oil pressure sender from the SR5, but I'm no expert with these trucks after 1988.

 

The sr5 fuel gauge is not as accurate as the the standard one. Finding the cluster to match, v6, or 4cyl, auto, manual, can make it a pain. If you just want tach, get one of those and save the trouble of all that dash work. If you want oil pressure too, maybe worth it, but its a pain in the rear plugging in and unplugging the speedo cable. If you want to keep your speedometer for odometer mileage, you have to remove the needle and disassemble the cluster. Sometimes the needles don't match and they break really easy. I had to pull mine like pulling a gear. The needle shafts weren't the same, so I had to mess with that for 3 hours.

Check you new cluster lamps before you button the thing up some of the donor lamps will be burnt out, and they don't all swap out with the old cluster.

I think I have had mine apart 8 times since I did the swap for various reasons.I can strip the whole dash down in about 3 minutes now, but the first time took all day. I think I ended up with one extra screw each time I take it apart.

If I still had my old standard cluster, I might go back. The inaccuracy of the tach, and fuel gauge are more irritating than if I had just installed a tach.
